This work contains experimental, theoretical, and modeling research papers from a December 2003 symposium on the mechanical behavior of thin films, touching on topics in stress evolution, modeling stresses and film instability, deformation and adhesion, film fracture and fatigue, processing and structure, indentation testing, mechanical properties, properties and performance, and multilayers and nanolaminates. Some specific topics include fracture patterns in thin films and multilayers, thin film herringbone buckling patterns, the effect of oxygen on adhesion of thin copper films to silicon nitride, and the effects of stress amplitude on the fatigue of polysilicon. The aim of this major reference work is to provide a first point of entry to the literature for the researchers in any field relating to structural integrity in the form of a definitive research/reference tool which links the various sub-disciplines that comprise the whole of structural integrity. Special emphasis will be given to the interaction between mechanics and materials and structural integrity applications. Because of the interdisciplinary and applied nature of the work, it will be of interest to mechanical engineers and materials scientists from both academic and industrial backgrounds including bioengineering, interface engineering and nanotechnology. The scope of this work encompasses, but is not restricted to: fracture mechanics, fatigue, creep, materials, dynamics, environmental degradation, numerical methods, failure mechanisms and damage mechanics, interfacial fracture and nano-technology, structural analysis, surface behaviour and heart valves. The structures under consideration include: pressure vessels and piping, off-shore structures, gas installations and pipelines, chemical plants, aircraft, railways, bridges, plates and shells, electronic circuits, interfaces, nanotechnology, artificial organs, biomaterial prostheses, cast structures, mining... and more. Case studies will form an integral part of the work.

This book from the Materials Research Society emphasizes the broad scientific and technological interest in applications of organic materials to optoelectronics and optics. Materials synthesis, modification, and characterization from the nanoscale to the mesoscale to the macroscale are discussed. Approaches for modeling and theoretical analysis of these materials are highlighted. Also featured in the volume are a keynote talk from Professor Alan Heeger, 2000 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, as well as five papers from the Microphotonics symposium that address photonic crystals involving organic materials. Additional topics include: metal/organic interfaces - electronic structure and charge injection; photonic/nonlinear optical materials and devices; design and synthesis of electroluminescent materials; applications in displays; electrochromic polymers/sensors; organic transistors; photovoltaics and photodetectors - transport in bulk organic materials and novel patterning schemes.

Nanotechnologies have already attracted massive interest in multiple fields of science and industry. In the past decades, we have witnessed the progress in micro-level experimental techniques that revolutionize the material science. Designing new materials based on the knowledge of mechanics of their building blocks and microstructure manipulations at nanometer scale have become a reality. Nanoindentation, as a leading micro-level mechanical testing technique, has attracted wide attention in numerous research fields and applications. Nowadays, an extensive variety of testing areas ranging from classical thin coatings in machinery engineering, electronics and composites to far fields of civil engineering, biomechanics, implantology or even agriculture can be covered with this universal testing tool. The book aims to be a walk through achievements in some of the distant fields and to give a brief overview of the current frontiers in nanoindentation. Although it is not possible to cover the whole width of the possible themes in one book, it is believed that the reader will benefit from the topics variety and the book will serve as a useful source of literature references.
