THEOLOGY RELATIONSHIP OF RELIGIONS AND PHILOSOPHY Theological functions and interests imply that theology can master the disciplines with which it is confronted. Theology is based on authority (revelation) as documented in scriptures of various religions, philosophical, philological, historical studies and hermeneutical (critical interpretive) questions. Theological tasks broaden into a concern with the history and traditions of religions. With such approaches difficult and controversial questions arise; whether and to what extent the scriptural standards of the sources of revelation are modified by traditions. These problems play an important part in the relationship of people, cultures and their political philosophies. Thus, the question of truth posed by theology requires the constitution of a discipline that specifically concerns itself with fundamental questions, as is in systematic theology.

This is a book with a clearly visible theme of Advaita. That is not to say, that Masih has not spoken of other things. However, this book is not an introduction to philosophy of religion, but an introduction to religious philosophy. Thus it escapes the narrow confines of being a mere introduction to religious philosophy, as there are plenty of insights on philosophy of religion as well. A striking aspect of this book is that the author not only believes, but also calculates logically, as to how the various insights of different religions must crossfertilise the visions of one another. This exercise obviously demands a great deal of understanding of the various religious commitments. The author quotes the example of Ramakrishna Paramahansa who suggested that there is something like religious unity and that one is capable of extending oneself beyond the limited confines of a single religion, of the Supreme Spirit. Thus, understanding the Supreme Spirit as a concept is useful, because it is in the nature of a concept that is shareable and comm-unicable. One appreciable part of the book is the sweep it has over the subject... from Galloway and Martinieu to J.N. Findlay, Hare Blik, Kant, Hastings, Rashdall to McCloskey and Radhakrishnan, the author has drawn from various thinkers.

Jim Kanaris provides a comprehensive understanding of esteemed theologian Bernard Lonergan's philosophy of religion and a crucial means of identifying precisely the points of contact between Lonergan's thoughts on God and religion and the issues presently discussed by philosophers of religion. Defining Lonergan's philosophy of religion presents a challenge because he does not use the term as it is generally understood. Rather, Lonergan addresses these issues under the guise of philosophy of God or natural theology, understands the role of religious experience idiosyncratically, and allows this concept to play various roles in his thought. The dynamics of these various components, their interrelationships, and their function from early to late development are fleshed out in this work.
