The Existence of God can be a challenging topic when brought up between theists and non-theists. Even so, there is much productive discussion to be had on the subject when people of differing perspectives meet. The Xing (The Crossing) paints a portrait of six different encounters between persons of different professional backgrounds. In these chance meetings, the professionals will present their varying points of view. It seeks to highlight what most will think about, but few are willing to talk about: the question of Gods existence. This exploration occurs through a variety of scenarios. A professor, through unforeseen circumstances, meets a mechanic. A lawyer speaks to his client, who is a truck driver. A neurosurgeon talks with his IT, and so on. Throughout their exchanges, a wide range of topics will be brought up. The inspiration for this novel comes from the Book of Job, in which Job debates with his friends over Gods involvement in times of suffering, or lack thereof. This novel depicts a series of civil and friendly discussions between persons who do not agree, which is really intended to inspire readers.

Jin Xing is a former prima ballerina, one of the brightest stars of the Shanghai Ballet. But her journey to international fame was fraught with difficulty, because Jin Xing was in fact born a man. From an early age she was intensely uncomfortable with her gender - a young boy dreaming of becoming a ballerina and a princess. Unable to understand or put words to these feelings, she immersed herself in ballet dancing, her first love. Before long, her precocious talent was noted and at the age of nine, in spite of her parents' concerns, she joined the People's Liberation Army Dance Corps. There, she received both dance and military training and attained the rank of Colonel. The curtains opened on a new act in her life when, at the age of 19, she received an arts scholarship to study modern dance in New York. While there she discovered for the first time that it was possible to change sex. She took the singularly courageous decision to return to China to undergo one of the first full sex-change operations the country had ever witnessed. The dream she had nutured from youth - of becoming a woman - finally became a reality. As dramatic, graceful and deeply felt as a pas de deux, Shanghai Tango is a deeply personal and inspiring account of growing up in a body that feels alien and of braving pioneering surgery in communist China.

This singular work presents the most comprehensive and nuanced studies available in any Western language of Chinese aesthetic thought and practice during the Six Dynasties (A.D. 220–589). Despite a succession of dynastic and social upheavals, the literati preoccupied themselves with both the sensuous and the transcendent and strove for cultural dominance. By the end of the sixth century, their reflections would evolve into a sophisticated system of aesthetic discourse characterized by its own rhetoric and concepts. A prologue details the historical context in which Six Dynasties aesthetics arose and sketches out its major stages of development. The ten essays that follow bring fresh perspectives to bear on important writings on literature, music, painting, calligraphy, and gardening. Grounded in close readings of primary texts, they reveal the complex, dynamic interplay between life and art, the sensuous and the metaphysical, and the artistic and the philosophicaleligious that lies at the heart of the aesthetic thought and practice of the time. As a whole, the collection demonstrates that Six Dynasties achieved a sophistication in aesthetic thought comparable in many ways to that of the West: The discussion of disinterestedness in art, aesthetic judgment, and how mental images mediate between the supersensible and the sensible are reminiscent of Kant. The findings of various Chinese critics provide much food for thought in the broad fields of comparative literature and aesthetics.
