Excerpt from The World's Wonders, as Seen by the Great Tropical and Polar Explorers The great and universal need of an encyclopedia of travel and discovery, and a compendium of the most remarkable natural wonders of the world, has prompted the production of this book. In it I have attempted to combine the discoveries and adventures of all the noted travelers and explorers in Tropical and Arctic fields, and in so doing to also furnish a history and description of the animals, reptiles, birds, and savage races of men, in all parts of the world, not omitting the natural phenomena peculiar to the Tropics and the Arctic regions. In the restless and ambitious disposition of mankind there is more than curiosity, or a misdirected desire for familiarity with remote or insular phases of nature, for there is also that more wisely considerate wish for such extended knowledge as not alone gratifies curiosity, but which stimulates and energizes an ambition to extend the domain of civilization, with its attendant resources and comforts. In the preparation of a work so comprehensive in scope, it was necessary to give careful perusal to scores of standard publications, and to collate with critical discrimination from them all; for condensation was imperative, and yet every interesting or valuable incident found in the histories from which this is compiled, must needs find place in its appropriate narrative. Excerpt from The Marvellous Wonders of the Polar World: Being a Complete and Authentic History of Voyages and Discoveries in the Polar Regions The recent terrible experiences of the delong and Greely expeditions have awakened intense interest in the region towards which the world still looks, with unsatisfied inquiry. The object of this book is to present, in one volume, an authentic record of all that can interest the general reader in connection with the efforts put forth by Arctic explorers to solve the problems presented in the Polar regions. Nothing in the whole range of literature can be more enter taining than the accounts of the various expeditions to the frozen North - that in search of a northwest passage under Sir John Franklin, the voyages of Lieut. Dehaven, Dr. Kane and Dr. Hayes, the three expeditions of Charles Francis Hall, the remarkable sledge journey of three thousand miles, by Lieut. Schwatka, U. S. A., the cruise and loss of the Jeannette, and the relief expeditions sent out for delong, closing with the account of the Greely expedition and the rescue of Lieut. Greely and the survivors of his party - thus covering the whole field of Arctic explorations. No better example of the influence of lofty motives in the conduct of life can be found than is seen in the case of these brave adventurers and martyrs in the cause of science. The youth of our country will draw many ennobling lessons from the patriotic self-sacrifice of Franklin, Kane, Hayes, Hall, De Long and Greely, in the perusal of this work. There always will be a great interest among the people in books relating to voyages of discovery, adventure, suffering and death.
