Excerpt from The Works of Robert Bloomfield "Bloomfield, thy happy omen'd name, Ensures continuance to thy fame: Both sense and truth this verdict give, While fields shall bloom thy name shall live.' Very happy was this exclamation of Kirke White, himself one of the most genial, although most unhappy of poets, concerning an humble poet and shoemaker, whose descriptions of nature are in some respects better than those of Thomson, although they scarcely equal those of Ebenezer Elliott. Yet, in writing a sketch of the life of Robert Bloomfield, there is somehow a void. We have not here to deal with the eccentricities of a young untrained mind, as in the case of Chatterton; there is not the intense interest about the career of this poet, as there is in some of those who struggle up from the foul noisome dens of poverty, - struggle up, and strive for immortality in common with peer or viscount, Byron or Maidstone. Yet there is an interest attaching to Bloomfield, as there is an interest attaching to most men who are self-educated, and who, although not starving, have to labour hard for their daily bread. Let us look at him in London, through his brother's eyes: - "I have him in my mind's eye," says George Bloomfield, "a little boy; not bigger than boys generally are at twelve years old. Excerpt from The Poems of Robert Bloomfield, Vol. 2 of 3 What now forms the first part of this Volume. Was published in 1802 under the title of 'rnral Tales, ' and the remainder in 1806 under the name of 'wild Flowers.' Several pieces in the first col lection, which the Public have sanctioned by a long and generous approbation, were written before the publication of the Farmer's Boy and consequently before I had friends to thank, or failures to dread. The original mss. Of these Poems are now in my possession, and I find therein, that seven years ago, I made memorandums which are now useful. Two or three of these detached sentences, as they are. Excerpt from The Remains of Robert Bloomfield, Vol. 2 of 2: Author of the Farmer's Boy, Rural Tales, &C Uley is situated in rather a singular valley, about seven miles from the Severn. It appears to be surrounded by abrupt and woody hills, except on the north; where a bold promontory, with an old camp on its brow, called the "Bury," lifts its bald head, and whose sides, yielding plenty of stone for building, are extremely steep. Excerpt from The Poems of Robert Bloomfield, Vol. 3 of 3 A Swiss, or perhaps a Scottish Highlander, may smile at supposed or real exaggerations; but they will be excellent critics when they call to mind that they themselves judge in these cases, as I do, by comparison. Excerpt from Selections From the Correspondence of Robert Bloomfield, the Suffolk Poet My principle of selection was simply this - to take such letters, or parts of letters, as related to the literary labours of the poet; all others I have omitted, at least for the present. If this little volume should meet with encouragement, I may be induced to print the whole of the correspondence; for, as a rule, selections are not desirable; they are apt to give false impressions, though I think in the present instance I have not done anything calculated to mislead. I have adhered strictly to the rule I laid down for myself at the outset, and have only deviated in one or two instances, where I thought the letter would be of interest.
