"The Witchkin Murders is a supernatural police procedural with interesting characters who are full of secrets and a plot that is full of twists and turns. A fun read." --Anne Bishop, New York Times bestselling author of Wild Country Four years ago, my world--the world--exploded with wild magic. The cherry on top of that crap cake? The supernatural world declared war on humans, and my life went straight to hell. I used to be a detective, and a damned good one. Then Magicfall happened, and I changed along with the world. I'm witchkin now--something more than human or not quite human, depending on your perspective. To survive, I've become a scavenger, searching abandoned houses and stores for the everyday luxuries in short supply--tampons and peanut butter. Oh, how the mighty have fallen, but anything's better than risking my secret. Except, old habits die hard. When I discover a murder scene screaming with signs of black magic ritual, I know my days of hiding are over. Any chance I had of escaping my past with my secret intact is gone. Solving the witchkin murders is going to be the hardest case of my life, and not just because every second will torture me with reminders of how much I miss my old life and my partner, who hates my guts for abandoning the department. But it's time to suck it up, because if I screw this up, Portland will be wiped out, and I'm not going to let that happen. Hold on to your butts, Portland. Justice is coming, and I don't take prisoners. About the Author: Diana Pharaoh Francis is the acclaimed author of a dozen novels of fantasy and urban fantasy. Her books have been nominated for the Mary Roberts Rinehart Award and RT's Best Urban Fantasy. The Witchkin Murders is the first book in her exciting new urban fantasy series--Magicfall. Welcome back to Diamond City where hell just busted loose. Senator Rice, hater of all things magic, declared martial law following the recent bombings. His goal? Arrest all magic-wielders and take control of the mines. To get what he wants, he doesn't care how many people have to die. How is Riley supposed to stop an army without starting a bigger war? It's going to take deceit, timing, sleight of hand, and a whole lot of luck. To help, she's got her family, friends, and a collection of mobsters, who will probably slide a blade between her ribs the second she turns her back. But beggars can't be choosers, and playing it safe is a losing proposition. Unfortunately, there's more going on than anybody realizes, and the real enemy has yet to show his face. When push comes to shove, can Riley risk sacrificing the people she loves to save a city of people she doesn't even know? Risk her people, her family on a plan almost certainly doomed to fail? A majority of ethnographer Morris Edward Opler’s research was done on Native American groups of the American Southwest. He studied specifically the Chiricahua Indians, who were the subjects of one of his most famous books, An Apache Life-Way: The Economic, Social, and Religious Institutions of the Chiricahua Indians. Opler studied many Native American groups, but the Apache were a main focus of his. An Apache Life-Way traces the life of an Apache year by year. Rather than a history, the book explains the day-to-day Apache experience, detailing the chronological order of one’s life. The lifestyle described in the book is from a time before the Americans started the long era of hostile interactions with the Apache. The people designated as “Apache” in this book are those who spoke the Apache language in the area that is now New Mexico, Arizona, Sonora, and Chihuahua. There were many smaller sub-groups that populated these areas, three of them different groups of the Chiricahua Apache. An Apache Life-Way is divided into several main parts: Childhood; Maturation; Social Relations of Adults; Folk Beliefs, Medical Practice, and Shamanism; Maintenance of the Household; Marital and Sexual Life; The Round of Life; Political Organization and Status; and Death, Mourning, and the Underworld. Each section is divided into more specific subcategories that explore each phase of life and the rituals associated with it. Originally published in 1941, An Apache Life-Way remains one of the most important and innovative studies of south-western Native Americans. “First-class...in the best ethnographic tradition. It fills a great gap in our anthropological knowledge and...deserves to be one of the most used of American tribal records.”—Ruth Benedict, author of Patterns of Culture
