Excerpt from The Waterways Problem The report of the Inland Waterways Commission, appointed by the President in March of 1907, again calls attention to the urgent need of some drastic measures which will relieve the coun try from the inadequate facilities for the removal of the enormous tonnage which the nation produces. In referring to the report in his message the President characterizes it as the conservative, sane and just judgment of a body of exceptionally well qualified ex perts, and adds that if it errs-at all it is by over-conservatism. The subject of which it deals is of critical importance, both to the present and to the future of our country. Being in full accord with these sentiments and realizing the urgency of a speedy conclusion which shall make provision for the opening of the magnificent systems which the United States af fords for internal transportation by water, it seems appropriateto review briefly the actual situation and the remedies suggested. Not in a spirit of criticism, but with a View to an early remedy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Looking Squarely at the Water Power Problem This is a personal appeal for water power legislation. The author confesses that he has an old-fashioned ambition to do a constructive thing - to assist in the creation of an industrial opportunity in a neglected place and to make homes on land now silent. He also cherishes a hope of reasonable and wholesome reward. These are two honorable incentives which have, from the beginning of things, animated individual effort. Some people re gard such motives distrustfully but it cannot be believed that such sentiments which, if manifested in an earlier day, would have impeded or stifled our greatest commercial achievements, will long survive in the present day. Therefore, the author will state his case in all frankness and be confident that those who cannot accept his conclusions will have no reason to misconstrue his purpose. Excerpt from Water-Right Problems of Bear River The present bulletin is largely a statement of these interstate ques tions as illustrated in the Bear River Valley. This river was chosen for study because in its course of a little over 300 miles it crosses State lines (wyoming, Idaho, and Utah) five times, finally emptying into Salt Lake, which is less than 50 miles distant from its source, thus present ing in small compass a great variety of interstate problems, and offering exceptional opportunities for the inauguration of this class of inquiries. The bulletin is respectfully submitted, with the recommendation that it be published as Bulletin N o. 70 of this Office. Therefore we can safely assume that after our plant is installed our taxes will be lessened, our water rates will be decreased, and that year by year we are acquiring through the sinking fund a valuable property. At the end of forty years the plant belongs to the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
