This story takes place 30 years after a nuclear apocalypse. Each chapter is from the point of view of a present-day, unnamed narrator and also of Zara, an elder who knew the world before the disaster. Desperate for water, a group sets out to the North to find the Great Lakes, a place where there is rumored to be an abundance of water. They endure storms, hostile camps, quicksand, and illness as they search for a place that they do not even know exists.
