Set against Berlin's extraordinary Tempelhof Central Airport and its labyrinth of secret tunnels, Last Flight from Tempelhof spans six tumultuous decades in the ever-changing German capital city. Tony Swan, a career U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, must flush out any threats against two U.S. presidents when they visit Berlin. One president, in June of 1987, is about to make a speech at the Berlin Wall that could change the course of history. The other president, twenty-one years later, hopes to salvage his legacy after leading the United States into a disastrous war. He and his secretary of state join a crowd of 100,000 to witness the historic final flight from Tempelhof the airport that once saved West Berlin and is now being transformed into a giant amusement park, thus fulfilling the vision of Hitler's chief architect, Albert Speer. Haunted by personal tragedy and his own doubts about American foreign policy, Swan uncovers murderous conspiracies in two vastly different geopolitical eras. Racing the clock, he is eluded by the deadly secret that ties the plots together, hidden for two decades somewhere in the long-forgotten passages beneath the massive terminal building at Tempelhof.

"Lions of Marjah" is a book that I started while fighting the Taliban in the Helmand River Valley Province of Afghanistan. Living, eating and sleeping amongst the enemy. The book begins with an introduction to my history in the corps and drops the reader in when I re-enlisted and moved to 3rd Battalion 6th Marines where I was assigned to Kilo Company 2nd platoon as a infantry Squad Leader. It talks about the challenges that a new squad leader faces when entering a new platoon and the challenges faced by the new guys he means to lead. Next the book introduces the deployment to Afghanistan and the mission that our unit was tasked with. We would be going into Marjah and liberating the people there from the totalitarian grips of the Taliban. We would invade the city of Marjah by helicopter with one other company from 1st Battalion 6th Marines, while the rest of the Companies from both Battalions surrounded and squeezed the enemy in toward us. We would be tasked with seizing and holding Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) objective (OBJ) number 2, which was a land bridge road intersection where a suspected Master Bomb Maker lived and operated. We were to clear and hold the area and await follow on instructions. With stiff resistance and next to constant fighting this took 3 days longer than it was supposed to. The book moves from firefight to firefight through the first 4 weeks of fighting and then breaks down the deployment in sections (chapters) and covers the experiences therein. The sections range from contact patrols to the emotions and experiences of killing another human being to losing one of my own guys. The book has a variety of after-actions and lessons learned from the different engagements throughout the time in Marjah, to share experiences and provide real situations to think about for the warfighters that protect the nation. This book drives at the heart of the infantry community and will really put the war fighting experience in perspective for those who have never been.

The harrowing account of US soldiers caught in America’s forever wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that The New York Times calls “relentless...a classic of war reporting,” by Pulitzer Prize winner and former Marine C.J. Chivers. More than 2.7 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001, and C.J. Chivers reported on both wars from their beginnings. The Fighters vividly conveys the physical and emotional experience of war as lived by six combatants: a fighter pilot, a corpsman, a scout helicopter pilot, a grunt, an infantry officer, and a Special Forces sergeant. Chivers captures their courage, commitment, sense of purpose, and ultimately their suffering, frustration, and moral confusion as new enemies arise and invasions give way to counterinsurgency duties for which American forces were often not prepared. The Fighters is a “gripping, unforgettable” (The Boston Globe) portrait of modern warfare. Told with the empathy and understanding of an author who is himself an infantry veteran, The Fighters is “a masterful work of atmospheric reporting, and it’s a book that will have every reader asking—with varying degrees of urgency or anger or despair—the final question Chivers himself asks: ‘How many lives had these wars wrecked?’” (Christian Science Monitor).

First published in 2003. The NATO-led Operation Allied Force was fought in 1999 to stop Serb atrocities against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. This war, as noted by the distinguished military historian John Keegan, "marked a real turning point . . . and proved that a war can be won by airpower alone." Colonels Haave and Haun have organized firsthand accounts of some of the people who provided that airpower-the members of the 40th Expeditionary Operations Group. Their descriptions-a new wingman's first combat sortie, a support officer's view of a fighter squadron relocation during combat, and a Sandy's leadership in finding and rescuing a downed F-117 pilot-provide the reader with a legitimate insight into an air war at the tactical level and the airpower that helped convince the Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic, to capitulate.

From Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen, the untold USA Today bestselling story of the CIA's secret paramilitary units. Surprise . . . your target. Kill . . . your enemy. Vanish . . . without a trace. When diplomacy fails, and war is unwise, the president calls on the CIA's Special Activities Division, a highly-classified branch of the CIA and the most effective, black operations force in the world. Originally known as the president's guerrilla warfare corps, SAD conducts risky and ruthless operations that have evolved over time to defend America from its enemies. Almost every American president since World War II has asked the CIA to conduct sabotage, subversion and, yes, assassination. With unprecedented access to forty-two men and women who proudly and secretly worked on CIA covert operations from the dawn of the Cold War to the present day, along with declassified documents and deep historical research, Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen unveils -- like never before -- a complex world of individuals working in treacherous environments populated with killers, connivers, and saboteurs. Despite Hollywood notions of off-book operations and external secret hires, covert action is actually one piece in a colossal foreign policy machine. Written with the pacing of a thriller, Surprise, Kill, Vanish brings to vivid life the sheer pandemonium and chaos, as well as the unforgettable human will to survive and the intellectual challenge of not giving up hope that define paramilitary and intelligence work. Jacobsen's exclusive interviews -- with members of the CIA's Senior Intelligence Service (equivalent to the Pentagon's generals), its counterterrorism chiefs, targeting officers, and Special Activities Division's Ground Branch operators who conduct today's close-quarters killing operations around the world -- reveal, for the first time, the enormity of this shocking, controversial, and morally complex terrain. Is the CIA's paramilitary army America's weaponized strength, or a liability to its principled standing in the world? Every operation reported in this book, however unsettling, is legal.
