Although her sister has pulled up stakes and moved her family to the psychic community of Norseton, Marty Petersen doesn’t believe she’ll fit in with them. She belongs in familiar Florida, and not in the desert amidst a clan of thoroughly modern Vikings. Afótama clansman Chris Holst doesn’t agree. He’s been dreaming of Marty for nearly a year and knows she’s meant to be his. He doesn’t want her to leave Norseton before he’s had his chance to bond with her in the way of their kind, but he understands why she’d be afraid. Her father is the clan’s most notorious fraud, and the blowback from his imminent expulsion could upset the single mom’s already shaky situation. He’s willing to stand at her side and hold her hand until the turmoil subsides, but she has to let him into her life first. If Marty can’t break free from the depressive grip of the lies that have suppressed her for so many years, she won’t be able to take what’s hers. She could wield the magic of the Afótama, and more importantly, she could claim the worthy man who is rightfully hers. ____ Other books available in The Afótama Legacy: -The Viking Queen's Men -The Chieftain's Daughter -Viking's Pride -Viking Flame

When her mother dies after a long illness, Ingrid Torfa must sell the family home to cover the medical bills. Her career as a book illustrator not yet exactly launched, Ingrid faces two options: live in her battered old Volkswagen, or go back to her mother's small town in northern Minnesota. The small town that still haunts her dreams more than a decade since she last visited it. Or rather, not the town but the grandmother. All of the drawings she fills notebooks with witches and the trolls that do their bidding? Not as whimsical in her nightmares as she sketches them in the bright light of day. If not for her beloved cat Mjolner, living in the Volkswagen just might tempt her. But the cat wants four walls and a door, so north she goes. And that's where her adventures begin. Stephen A. Mitchell here offers the fullest examination available of witchcraft in late medieval Scandinavia. He focuses on those people believed to be able—and who in some instances thought themselves able—to manipulate the world around them through magical practices, and on the responses to these beliefs in the legal, literary, and popular cultures of the Nordic Middle Ages. His sources range from the Icelandic sagas to cultural monuments much less familiar to the nonspecialist, including legal cases, church art, law codes, ecclesiastical records, and runic spells. Mitchell's starting point is the year 1100, by which time Christianity was well established in elite circles throughout Scandinavia, even as some pre-Christian practices and beliefs persisted in various forms. The book's endpoint coincides with the coming of the Reformation and the onset of the early modern Scandinavian witch hunts. The terrain covered is complex, home to the Germanic Scandinavians as well as their non-Indo-European neighbors, the Sámi and Finns, and it encompasses such diverse areas as the important trade cities of Copenhagen, Bergen, and Stockholm, with their large foreign populations; the rural hinterlands; and the insular outposts of Iceland and Greenland. By examining witches, wizards, and seeresses in literature, lore, and law, as well as surviving charm magic directed toward love, prophecy, health, and weather, Mitchell provides a portrait of both the practitioners of medieval Nordic magic and its performance. With an understanding of mythology as a living system of cultural signs (not just ancient sacred narratives), this study also focuses on such powerful evolving myths as those of "the milk-stealing witch," the diabolical pact, and the witches' journey to Blåkulla. Court cases involving witchcraft, charm magic, and apostasy demonstrate that witchcraft ideologies played a key role in conceptualizing gender and were themselves an important means of exercising social control.

When her mother died after a long illness, Ingrid Torfa sold the family home to cover the medical bills. Her career as a book illustrator not yet exactly launched, Ingrid moved back to her mother's small hometown in northern Minnesota and the grandmother she scarcely remembered. Then she learned the truth she had forgotten since her early childhood: that Vikings still exist, and her grandmother serves as their spiritual leader and protector. Now Ingrid must leave the modern world behind for a time and immerse herself in this forgotten world. She must know if she has what it takes to serve the people of Villmark as her grandmother serves them. Or if her destiny lies instead among her friends in the modern world of Runde, Minnesota. No easy decision. But at least her magical cat Mjolner remains always by her side. Together, they can face anything either world can throw at them. Even if it’s murder. Angrboda's story begins where most witch's tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to give him knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into a remote forest. There she is found by a man Loki, and her initial distrust grows into a deep and abiding love. Their union produces three unusual children, each with a secret destiny, who she is keen to raise at the hidden from Odin's all-seeing eye. But as Angrboda slowly recovers her prophetic powers, she learns that her blissful life - and possibly all of existence - is in danger.

In the tradition of Stacy Schiff’s Cleopatra, Brown lays to rest the hoary myth that Viking society was ruled by men and celebrates the dramatic lives of female Viking warriors “Once again, Brown brings Viking history to vivid, unexpected life—and in the process, turns what we thought we knew about Norse culture on its head. Superb.” —Scott Weidensaul, author of New York Times bestselling A World on the Wing "Magnificent. It captured me from the very first page." —Pat Shipman, author of The Invaders In 2017, DNA tests revealed to the collective shock of many scholars that a Viking warrior in a high-status grave in Birka, Sweden was actually a woman. The Real Valkyrie weaves together archaeology, history, and literature to imagine her life and times, showing that Viking women had more power and agency than historians have imagined. Nancy Marie Brown uses science to link the Birka warrior, whom she names Hervor, to Viking trading towns and to their great trade route east to Byzantium and beyond. She imagines her life intersecting with larger-than-life but real women, including Queen Gunnhild Mother-of-Kings, the Viking leader known as The Red Girl, and Queen Olga of Kyiv. Hervor’s short, dramatic life shows that much of what we have taken as truth about women in the Viking Age is based not on data, but on nineteenth-century Victorian biases. Rather than holding the household keys, Viking women in history, law, saga, poetry, and myth carry weapons. These women brag, “As heroes we were widely known—with keen spears we cut blood from bone.” In this compelling narrative Brown brings the world of those valkyries and shield-maids to vivid life.
