This book is specially designed as a course book for the non-Marathi speaking adult learners of Marathi language. This course has been tried out by the authors themselves. They have taught it in various Marathi-language teaching programmes to learners from different disciplines and occupations. All the lessons in it are situation oriented and it serves the purpose of providing cultural set-up of Marathi language. All of them are organized according to the gradation of the structural units given at the beginning of every lesson. These lessons are followed by grammatical notes. The grammatical notes, if followed in sequence will debit the structure of the pedagogical grammar of current Marathi. Every lesson is equipped with various drills and exercises for the practice and for guessing the purpose of the learners. At the end of every lesson a special conversational paragraph is added for giving the feel of free usage of Marathi. An important and unique feature of this book is the special script book added to it in the beginning. It contains eighteen chapters for script teaching. Here-in the letters are graphed according to the principle of shape similarity. The author have taken pains to demonstrate all the possible strokes, their sequences and the direction of writing them. The four appendixes given at the end are quite useful. The vocabulary and the solution of all the exercises especially will be useful learning aids for the self learners as well.

Barrio Gangs is the most comprehensive academic case study of barrio group dynamics in a major Texas city to date. This is a sociological work on the history of barrio gangs in San Antonio and other large Texas cities to the present day. It examines the century-long evolution of urban barrio subcultures using public archives, oral histories, old photos, and other forms of qualitative data. The study gives special attention to the barrio gangs’ “heyday,” from the 1940s through the 1960s, comparing their attributes to those of modern groups. It illustrates how social and technological changes have affected barrio networking processes and the intensity of the street lifestyle over time. Intergenerational shifts and the tension that accompanies such changes are also central themes in the book. Few other places are so conducive to such historical exploration as is San Antonio. Street ignobility in the barrio no doubt mirrors processes found in other Chicano communities in Texas and the Southwest. The gang contexts in major Chicano population centers have lengthy historical bases rooted in weak opportunity structures, oppression, and discrimination. This work shows that participation in street violence, drug selling, and other parts of the informal economy are functional adaptations to the social structure; the forces propelling the formation of barrio gangs are not temporary social phenomena.

Prakrit has a vast literature but it had no systematic comprehensive grammar. Scholars like Vararuci, Hemacandra, Trivikrama, Markandeya, Laksmidhara, Krsna Pandit, Ramasarana Tarkavagisa had indeed their own grammars but they differed immensely in respect of their contents. Lessen was the first who tried to systematize Prakrit grammar but he wrote in Latin. Then came Pischel who analysed not only the extant grammars but studied minutely the whole of extant Prakrit literature and collected first hand information about this important language.
