The aim of this volume is to bring together research ideas from various fields of mathematics which utilize the heat kernel or heat kernel techniques in their research. The intention of this collection of papers is to broaden productive communication across mathematical sub-disciplines and to provide a vehicle which would allow experts in one field to initiate research with individuals in another field, as well as to give non-experts a resource which can facilitate expanding theirresearch and connecting with others.

The heat kernel has long been an essential tool in both classical and modern mathematics but has become especially important in geometric analysis as a result of major innovations beginning in the 1970s. The methods based on heat kernels have been used in areas as diverse as analysis, geometry, and probability, as well as in physics. This book is a comprehensive introduction to heat kernel techniques in the setting of Riemannian manifolds, which inevitably involves analysis of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the associated heat equation. The first ten chapters cover the foundations of the subject, while later chapters deal with more advanced results involving the heat kernel in a variety of settings. The exposition starts with an elementary introduction to Riemannian geometry, proceeds with a thorough study of the spectral-theoretic, Markovian, and smoothness properties of the Laplace and heat equations on Riemannian manifolds, and concludes with Gaussian estimates of heat kernels. Grigor'yan has written this book with the student in mind, in particular by including over 400 exercises. The text will serve as a bridge between basic results and current research.Titles in this series are co-published with International Press, Cambridge, MA, USA.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Complex Analysis and Dynamical Systems, held from May 19-24, 2013, in Nahariya, Israel, in honor of David Shoikhet's sixtieth birthday. The papers in this volume range over a wide variety of topics in Partial Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, and the Radon Transform. Taken together, the articles collected here provide the reader with a panorama of activity in partial differential equations and general relativity, drawn by a number of leading figures in the field. They testify to the continued vitality of the interplay between classical and modern analysis. The companion volume (Contemporary Mathematics, Volume 667) is devoted to complex analysis, quasiconformal mappings, and complex dynamics. This book is co-published with Bar-Ilan University (Ramat-Gan, Israel).

'The book is primarily addressed to physicists. Nevertheless, as numerous examples are known in which exploration of the land where physics and mathematics overlap (and which quantum field theory definitely belongs to) resulted in important developments in mathematics, many mathematicians may also find this book interesting and even inspiring.'MathSciNetThis book is devoted to the subject of quantum field theory. It is divided into two volumes. The first can serve as a textbook on the main techniques and results of quantum field theory, while the second treats more recent developments, in particular the subject of quantum groups and noncommutative geometry, and their interrelation. The first volume is directed at graduate students who want to learn the basic facts about quantum field theory. It begins with a gentle introduction to classical field theory, including the standard model of particle physics, general relativity, and also supergravity. The transition to quantized fields is performed with path integral techniques, by means of which the one-loop renormalization of a self-interacting scalar quantum field, of quantum electrodynamics, and the asymptotic freedom of quantum chromodynamics is treated. In the last part of the first volume, the application of path integral methods to systems of quantum statistical mechanics is covered. The book ends with a rather detailed investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect, and gives a stringent derivation of Laughlin's trial ground state wave function as an exact ground state. The second volume covers more advanced themes. In particular Connes' noncommutative geometry is dealt with in some considerable detail; the presentation attempts to acquaint the physics community with the substantial achievements that have been reached by means of this approach towards the understanding of the elusive Higgs particle. The book also covers the subject of quantum groups and its application to the fractional quantum Hall effect, as it is for this paradigmatic physical system that noncommutative geometry and quantum groups can be brought together.
