Excerpt from The Trial of Maharaja Nanda Kumar: A Narrative of a Judicial Murder This book is mainly a reprint of two articles in the Calcutta Review of this year Calcutta Review of this year, but I have altered the arrangement, and I have made a good many additions and omissions. I have also made much use of the invaluable documents recently discovered in the High Court Record-room. I am not able to make the account of the Trial easy reading, and it is by lawyers and students of history that I wish to be judged. I confess that when I first received Sir J. Stephen's book, I was a good deal discouraged, and almost dismayed. I saw that I had made some mistakes in my former writings on the subject (though really that about the kararnama was the only one which affected my argument), and I felt that it would be perilous to enter the lists against one so able and so famed as Sir J. Stephen. I had been a great admirer of Sir James's legal work in India, and I felt it rather cruel that he should imply that I knew nothing about English law, for I had been a diligent student of his own works, and thought I had learned something from them. My discouragement, however, was removed when I found that Sir J. Stephen had evidently taken up the subject hastily, and had written his book in a hurry. The true account of the first Judicial Murder in British India 1775: British East India Company had won the battles of Plassey and Buxar. Their devastating tax measures and government machinery led to the Great Bengal Famine. Even as the masses struggled for survival, the Company was on a steady path towards maximizing profits and becoming the undisputed rulers of Bengal. Maharaja Nanda Kumar was an influential landowner in Bengal, who had been put in charge for revenue collection by the Company. He stumbled upon the elaborate game of money laundering and corruption with one man behind it all – Warren Hastings. Nanda Kumar decided to expose him and their battle of wits led to a historic eight-day Supreme Court trial. Its ripples reached London, leading to impeachment trials of two affluent British officers. Read The Trial of the Maharaja to know what happened when a brave Indian Maharaja stood up against the British authority. This real-life historical drama shows one man’s fight against men in power, for the love of his land and countrymen.
