Excerpt from The Training of Children a Book for Young Teachers A former book, entitled "Teaching a District School," having been received with gratifying appreciation by those for whom it was written, and also with the commendation of leading educators the country over, it is hoped that the present volume may be equally well received and prove to be even more helpful than its predecessor. It has long been the desire of the author to prepare, for country and village teachers, a work on the development and training of the mind that would contain the essential facts of psychology so plainly and simply expressed that any person might grasp their meaning without a too frequent appeal to the dictionary. It is possible, or it should be possible, to express the underlying truths of any important science in the everyday language of the people. Many young men and young women who lack both high school and college training are nevertheless not lacking in intelligence. They have the ability to understand any available knowledge that is not expressed in terms with which they are unfamiliar. Excerpt from The Training of Children, From Cradle to School: A Guide for Young Mothers Teachers and Nurses To tell such girls that a knowledge of psycho logy and physiology and of many other things is needed, if they are to be successful trainers of the young, is simply to frighten them; they make up their minds that such subjects are beyond them, and that they must get on as best they can with the help of their mother-wit. What does seem to be wanted is a short book which shall give in a concise form some guid ance as to the laws of health, the powers of a child, and how best to train his faculties. Excerpt from The Child's Mind, Its Growth and Training: Being a Short Study of Some Processes of Learning and Teaching The reasons for writing this book are sufficiently set forth in the introduction. It is not a treatise on psychology, still less a new and full-fledged theory of education. Nor, on the other hand, is it a complete handbook for teachers. It is rather an attempt to set forth in simple and, as far as possible, untechnical language some results already obtained from a study of mind growth as an organic process, and to establish a clear and definite connexion between those processes of learning which mind possesses, and the methods by which it should be taught and trained. These chapters will, it is hoped, enable the young teacher to use in practice the facts which he learns in his outline study of physiology and psychology, and provide the experienced teacher with a framework on to which he may fit the results of his experience without committing himself to any one philosophic system. Excerpt from Child Training This book sets forth a system of training for a child under school age and lays out a course of lessons and drills that can be given a class or an individual by either the trained or the untrained teacher or par ent. It may recall the principles or theories of Come nius, Locke, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Herbart, Froebel, James and others, but its practical applications are the result of many years' specializing in the education of young children.
