Excerpt from The Tiger, 1921 Since the time when, in 1883, the first school building even erected on the present site was completed, to the present day, Lewis and Clark's record has been one of constant growth, in size, in improvement of facilities, and in great achievements. The first building, combining the grade and high school students, utterly lacking in educational facilities, gave way in 1891 to a more modern structure, the old South Central High School. In 1910 this building was destroyed by fire, and our own Lewis and Clark took its place. This building with its large classrooms, broad corridors, and dignified architecture, complete with the very best in educational facilities, is pronounced one of the finest in the West. In this wonderful school, the Lewis and Clark student body has won laurel after laurel in the creation of its inspiring record. The majority of our school's graduates, going on to institutions of higher learning, have filled the colleges and universities of the country and by their records in athletics, oratory and scholarship, have given us nation-wide recognition. At home, because of her prowess in every line of activity, Lewis and Clark has gained the hearty and enthusiastic support of the com munity. Her fame has so spread that yearly hundreds of students come from all sections of the Inland Empire to receive a part or a whole of their education within her walls. Lewis and Clark's contribution to the war was characteristic of her fine record. From her student body and alumni she sent a full thousand men to the service. Every appeal for Liberty Bonds and War Savings Stamps met with a more than generous response. And then, to complete this glorious record, Lewis and Clark, with a burst of patriotic enthusiasm, pledged in a single day $1200 for a memorial to those of her sons who died in the great struggle. Lewis and Clark has reason for pride in the possession of an art gallery of several hundred beautiful pictures, a collection that can be equalled in few places in the West. This gallery in itself is a monument of the love and loyalty of Lewis and Clark's alumni for it has come entirely from her graduating classes. Excerpt from The Tiger, Vol. 12: December, 1914 I shall never forget those three long days. How could I? The roar of the thunder, the fright, the life in the jungle, and the rescue, seem to me like a dream of last night. My father, a man of about forty, was an ivory hunter. Our home was in the little town of York. I was about fifteen years old. Many a time I had begged my father to give me permission to accompany him on one of his hunts, for I had ever loved nature. I loved all animals, and they seemed to love me. I was in the habit of getting up early every morning, and with my hands full of bread crumbs, I would go out into the little wood behind our home, and there feed the twittering robins which fluttered around me Even the timid rabbit approached me without fear. But how I longed to be in a great forest! Day after day, I used to sit on a little stump in that little wood, dreaming of the great jungle, and its queer inhabitants. 50 great was my love for nature, as a child, that neve1 once did I feel fear for, or cause fear in bird or beast. But every time I asked my father to allow me to go with him, I received the same answer, No! This time, however, I begged and entreated so hard that at last I received the answer I had waited for so long. Little did I realize the hardships and dangers of such a trip. The next morning we were to leave. For two weeks everything had been in confusion. My clothing, arms, trunk, and other articles needed had been purchased. It was quite chilly that evening, and we all sat around the href Everything and everybody seemed cheerful to me. I have to smile to day, as I look back upon that night. There, in the corner, laughing and joking I sat. When I retired for the night, picture after picture passed before' Now I was leisurely and comfortably riding on the back of a huge ele phant. Now I was out hunting. Now paddling up a beautiful little stream, with its banks bordered by trees whose green, moss-clothed branches gently drooped down to the water's edge. Now I was sitting before the camp fire, listening to stories, or quietly reading. Then swiftly and suddenly a sad feeling stole over me. I don't know why it was, but I suddenly found my self wishing I were not going. Often after that I found myself quietly sob bing, and the tears rolled down my cheeks, onto the white pillow. When I awoke, the morning'sun was streaming into my room in golden beams. At nine we were to leave for Yarmouth, where 'we were to embark on my father's steamer. Excerpt from The Tiger, Vol. 1: December, 1903 Coming along the Oakland Mole, one can hardly imagine it possible that all the trains are controlled from one place. Yet this is so! Two men have charge of all the traffic on the mole, and it is their business to see that the trains get on the right tracks and in the right places. About twenty-three years ago the block system was introduced on the mole and no accidents have happened since, they being impossible if the engineer follows the signals. The first warning that a towerman has of the approach Of a train is from a bell which rings in the tower, and immediately the number of the track on which the train is approaching appears in front of him on the switch-board. He is sup posed to know immediately what train it is and to which track it should be switched. There are four tracks leading on to the mole, and these branch into sixteen switches, making all told about fifty switches to be controlled from Tower No. I.
