Adrian de Soules, exiled Templar in clandestine service to Robert the Bruce, finds himself drawn to flame-haired Kendra Claremont—niece of the Earl of Pembroke and granddaughter of an arch-enemy of the secret Templar Brotherhood—and knows she’s trouble. Finding she hates Templars, blaming them for her father’s suicide, increases the incentive to keep his distance. But, like a sailor at sea, he hears the ancient siren call. Kendra is intrigued by Adrian, the French knight so unlike the foppish couriers her aunt wants her to marry. She can’t deny his striking eyes send tingles through her, but she senses something secretive about him. Is he really just an envoy from Scotland as he says? A dark current runs deep within him, and she’s determined to find it out. Yet, when she does, where will her loyalty lie?

This book presents for the first time an English translation of henri de Curzon's 1886 edition of the French Rule, derived from the three extant medieval manuscripts. Both monastic rule and military manual, the Rule is a unique document and an important historical source. The Rule is divided into seven main sections: the Primitive Rule, Hierarchical Statutes, Penances, Conventual life, the Holding of Ordinary Chapters, Further Details on Penances, and Reception into the Order. There are details of the clothing, amour and equipment to which each brother was entitled; instructions to the brothers as to their conduct while on campaign, and information on the daily life of the members of this most influential military order, and on the monastic discipline which made it a formidable fighting force. The Rule evolved over almost one hundred and fifty years of the Order's history, and is thus a dynamic piece of work showing how the Templars adapted to political change and formulated their disciplinary code. An Introduction gives the historical background to the Rule and summarises the various sections. -- from back cover.

In October 1307 all the brothers of the military religious Order of the Temple in France were arrested on the instructions of King Philip IV and charged with heresy. In November, Pope Clement V instructed King Edward II of England to do likewise. This volume provide the first full translation of the four surviving texts of the trial proceedings that followed in Britain and Ireland, complementing the edition published in volume 1. The trial of the Templars was the first major heresy trial in the British Isles, and the proceedings reveal the Episcopate's attempts to deal with this unprecedented situation, the varying procedures followed in different countries, and how testimonies were recorded and summarised for the Church Councils which eventually decided the fate of the Order of the Temple. The testimonies given during the trial contain a wealth of information about religious beliefs among the lay population of the British Isles (both the Templars and outsiders who gave evidence during the trial), national and international mobility of lay religious, the social function of the order of the Temple in the British Isles and its relations with society at large, and the organisation and operations of the Order of the Temple at a local, national and international level. Detailed introductions to each volume describe the manuscripts and how the material was compiled and arranged, and discuss the course of the proceedings and the value of the evidence they contain. Appendices in this volume also list the names of all the Templars mentioned during the proceedings, Templar houses and the locations of the proceedings in London.
