Hugh Garfield returned from the Great War and continued his life as an electrical engineer in his old firm. One night he finds himself at the mention of mysterious millionaire Oswald De Gex, where Hugh and the host discover a dead body of a young woman. Hugh soon finds himself in France with no idea how he got there. As he tries to unravel the mystery, the clues take him on a very exciting tour across Europe. William Le Queux (1864-1927) was an Anglo-French writer who mainly wrote in the genres of mystery, thriller, and espionage, particularly in the years leading up to World War I. His best-known works are the anti-French and anti-Russian invasion fantasy "The Great War in England in 1897" and the anti-German invasion fantasy "The Invasion of 1910."

Excerpt from The Stretton Street Affair The whole circumstances of the Stretton Street Affair were so complicated and so amazing from start to finish that, had the facts been related to me, I confess I should never have for a moment given them credence. That they were hard, undeniable facts, presenting a problem both startling and sensational, the reader will quickly learn from this straightforward narrative - an open confession of what actually occurred. In all innocence, and certainly without any desire to achieve that ephemeral notoriety which accrues from having ones portrait in the pictorial press and being besieged by interviewers in search of a "story," I found myself, without seeking adventure, one of the chief actors in a drama which was perhaps one of the strangest and most astounding of this our twentieth century. I almost hesitate to set down the true facts, so utterly amazing are they. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
