Excerpt from The Story of the Garden of Eden The primitive and interesting story of the Garden of Eden in the Book of Genesis is contained in the second account, or tradition of the creation, which is evidently quite distinct and at variance with that which precedes it. After relating how man was formed and the trees and plants were made to grow, it is stated that man was placed in the Garden of Eden planted by the Lord God (Jehovah Elohim), "to dress it and to keep it." And that "the Lord God commanded the man, saying. Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it." Every beast of the field and fowl of the air are said to have been formed out of the ground and brought to Adam to be named, "and whatsoever Adam called every living creature that was the name thereof." Then woman is said to have been formed out of one of Adam's ribs as a "help meet for him." It being supposed to be necessary for Jehovah to cause "a deep sleep to fall upon Adam" to effect that object. Excerpt from The True Garden of Eden My principal object in writing this book is to make others see nature as she should be seen. Its theme is the ripple of the brook; the mur mur of the trees; the swish of the wave and the splash of the oar. It is the silence of the shady road; the quietude of the deserted camp.
