It was published in the Popular Science Monthly for August, 1909, and it is here reprinted with a few verbal changes. It is not in any sense a character study nor an appreciation. It contains no reference to personal peculiarities whether of strength or weakness, except as these may bear on the one great purpose that filled the later years of the life of Mrs. Stanford. Jane Lathrop Stanford, the daughter of Dyer Lathrop and Jane Ann Shields, was born in Albany, New York, on August 25, 1828.
