“I was across the marsh, by a stone wall.” I hadn’t intended to give away where I’d been, but I was getting flustered. “By the Stonemason’s Playground?” Tommy asked. “What’s that?” I said, trying to sound dumb. “It’s a haunted playground,” Brad said with a shiver. I could tell he liked being scared. “The kids who sneak into the playground to play are turned to stone. They never come back?” Tommy added. Haunted or not, this was the one place I could go to be myself. I decided that no story was going to stop me from visiting the Stonemason’s Playground. Ages 9 and up. “There's a werewolf around. I just know it.” “Johnson lost another lamb last night.” “They found what was left of it torn to bits down by the railroad track.” “And they found tracks of the monster too.” “It was horrible.” “They were huge.” Sheriff Corbin listened as the talk around him started raising the pulses of the crowd. Finally he stepped in. “All right, that's enough,” he yelled. “Frankly I don't believe all this talk, but if you folks are going to get all agitated up about it, then we're just going to have to figure out a sensible solution. The fog rolled in, wrapping itself around my shoulders like a stale, wet, gray cloak. It gathered deeper and deeper, like an old friend happy to see me after a long absence. And it hid me. It hid my presence from the watchful eyes in the cabin before me. That was fine with me. I needed the concealment more than I needed the sight. In fact, I didn't need to see the cabin at all. I could smell it. And I could smell most strongly the one thing I wanted more than anything else in the world right now. The thing that made my stomach ache with hunger. Sweet, young, tender flesh about fifteen years old. A werewolf's favorite meal. Find out what happens to the people in the cabin in this 15-minute tale of terror. Ages 9 and up. Ghosts and other supernatural phenomena are widely represented throughout modern culture. They can be found in any number of entertainment, commercial, and other contexts, but popular media or commodified representations of ghosts can be quite different from the beliefs people hold about them, based on tradition or direct experience. Personal belief and cultural tradition on the one hand, and popular and commercial representation on the other, nevertheless continually feed each other. They frequently share space in how people think about the supernatural. In Haunting Experiences, three well-known folklorists seek to broaden the discussion of ghost lore by examining it from a variety of angles in various modern contexts. Diane E. Goldstein, Sylvia Ann Grider, and Jeannie Banks Thomas take ghosts seriously, as they draw on contemporary scholarship that emphasizes both the basis of belief in experience (rather than mere fantasy) and the usefulness of ghost stories. They look closely at the narrative role of such lore in matters such as socialization and gender. And they unravel the complex mix of mass media, commodification, and popular culture that today puts old spirits into new contexts.

"What's wrong, Mommy?" Even a five-year-old could tell something was wrong. There she was-the same little girl I had seen years ago. She was standing at the front window of Duncan's nursery, holding the rag doll from the old toy box in the attic, silently saying, "It's me, it's me..." A true ghost story that will give you chills and warm your heart In 1971, Kathleen McConnell and her family moved into a historic home known as the Fontaine Manse. Two days after moving in, she and her husband had an extraordinary experience that left them with no doubt that unseen residents occupied the house, too. This is the true story of how Kathleen McConnell came to know and care for the spirit children who lived in the attic of the mansion-Angel Girl, Buddy, and The Baby. From playing ball with Kathleen, to saving her son Duncan from drowning, the spirit children became part of the McConnell family in ways big and small. Finally, a heart-wrenching decision triggered an unexpected and dramatic resolution to the spirit children's plight. Don't Call Them Ghosts is the inspiring story of the transcendent and lasting power of a mother's love.
