Whereas Freud himself viewed conscience as one of the functions of the superego, in The Still Small Voice: Psychoanalytic Reflections on Guilt and Conscience, the author argues that superego and conscience are distinct mental functions and that, therefore, a fourth mental structure, the conscience, needs to be added to the psychoanalytic structural theory of the mind. He claims that while both conscience and superego originate in the so-called pre-oedipal phase of infant and child development they are comprised of contrasting and often conflicting identifications. The primary object, still most often the mother, is inevitably experienced as, on the one hand, nurturing and soothing and, on the other, as frustrating and persecuting. Conscience is formed in identification with the nurturer; the superego in identification with the aggressor. There is a principle of reciprocity at work in the human psyche: for love received one seeks to return love; for hate, hate (the talion law).

This book documents Janet Cardiff's 1999 audio project, The Missing voice (Case Study B), and includes the full audio CD as well as images from this exploration of London's inner city. Part urban guide, part fiction, part film noir, her audio walk entwines the listener in a narrative that shifts through time and space. Intimate, even conspirational, Cardiff has created a psychologically absorbing experience for an audience of one at a time. You find yourself transported back in time. What was that sound? Who is speaking to you? Where does reality end, and what's imagined begin? Also included is an extended essay analyzing the artist's career to date. Born in 1957, in Brussels, Canada, Cardiff works and lives in Alberta and has shown internationally in, among others, London, New York, Berlin, and Vienna. Her work has been included in significant group exhibitions, notably Skulptur Projekte Munster, 1997; Present Tense: Nine Artists in the Nineties, at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the 1999 Carnegie International; and the Museum as Muse at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

In this second volume of his long-anticipated five-volume collection of parashat hashavua commentaries, Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks explores these intersections as they relate to universal concerns of freedom, love, responsibility, identity, and destiny. Chief Rabbi Sacks fuses Jewish tradition, Western philosophy, and literature to present a highly developed understanding of the human condition under Gods sovereignty. Erudite and eloquent, Covenant Conversation allows us to experience Chief Rabbi Sacks sophisticated approach to life lived in an ongoing dialogue with the Torah.

This best-selling volume has been fully revised and updated to take account of the latest thinking about the theory and practice of pastoral counselling. As reviews of the original edition demonstrate, this is a book that no Christian minister or lay counsellor can afford to be without. 'Michael Jacobs has written a book which in terms of realistic and sound understanding, of sensitivity to the real needs of people, of a proper encouragement and humility, could not be improved upon. I can think of no better book to recommend to those who are beginning to take the counselling task seriously. They will be given an excellent grounding, and will be spared many obvious and less obvious pitfalls.' Theology. 'It is lucid, persuasive and practical, firmly insisting that all those who dare to help others must start by seeking to understand - and love - themselves. The illustrative dialogue and events scattered across the pages offer fresh insights into what must be familiar ground for many readers feeling alone in the pastoral work they do. The chapters on beliefs and values and on endings are particularly valuable.'. Epworth Review.
