Excerpt from The Rusts of Cereal Crops Much has been published concerning the rusts, but it was not until near the middle of the eighteenth century that it was dis covered that they were fungi. Prior to that time there were vari ous popular beliefs as to the cause of rust, chief among which was one held by the Romans, which attributed the periodic ravages of the scourge to a special rust god, Robigus, who resorted to this means of wreaking his vengeance on a wicked people. Another and more persistent belief one that prevails here and there even to this day, attributes rust solely to the weather. We now know that weather greatly affects the development and spread of rust; we know also that there can be no rust without the causative fungus, a parasitic plant that finds its way into the tissues of a plant and draws its sustenance from them, thereby materially injuring the plant. Excerpt from Cereal Rusts of the United States: A Physiological Investigation Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a report on the cereal rusts of the United States, prepared by Mr. Mark Alfred Carleton, of this Division. Mr. Carleton has been engaged in an investigation of the diseases of cereals for several years and this report contains, in part, the results of the work. The several species of rusts affecting cereals in the United States are fully described, and the distribution of these rusts is given, together with a detailed statement of the results of extensive observations and experiments to determine the rust resistance of numerous varieties of wheat and oats. The life history of the rusts themselves has been very fully studied and the facts obtained from this work throw important light on problems connected with the breeding of rust-resistant varieties. In view of the wide distribution and the destructiveness of the rusts and the value of the results obtained, I respectfully recommend that the report be published as Bulletin No. 16 of this Division. Excerpt from Diseases of Cereal and Forage Crops in the United States in 1923 Nineteen hundred and twenty-three was not an unusual year for cereal diseases in general. Some diseases were more, and some were less prevalent than usual and naturally they varied greatly in severity in different parts of the country. Since stem rust is one of the most important cereal diseases and because of the recent efforts to control it through eradication of the barberry, the outbreak of this disease in parts of the Spring wheat area was especially noteworthy. The disease was more serious than it has been for the past two years, but the epidemic was not nearly so severe as those of 1916 and other years prior to the barberry eradication efforts. Another noticeable feature of the cereal disease situation was the comparatively light attack of the leaf rusts of wheat and rye. During 1921 and 1922 these diseases were quite destructive, but in 1923 they were notice able for their absence in many cases. Excerpt from Diseases of Cereal and Forage Crops in the United States in 1928 As usual, the most prevalent species of Tilletia was T. Laevis. Collaborators in Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Morth Dakota, Kansas, and Colorado all reported this species and stated that T. Tritici was not observed. In Montana, P. A. Young found that the smooth-spored species, 2. Laevis, was by far the more common. Out of specimens from.56 fields of winter Wheat that he examined microscopically, only three showed T. Tritici.
