All it takes is one look. One look for twelve-year-old Sydney and her nine-year-old brother Turk to know that everything has changed. The farm where their Uncle Frank and Aunt Lily used to live is gone, and along with it, their dreams of a "happily ever after." No safe place to hide from all that had gone wrong in their world; no one to tell them that everything would be alright. No one, even, to say that hopping a freight train and heading West probably wasn't the greatest idea they'd ever had. The farm had been their destination, but in its place was a strange new subdivision: The Royal Woods. Rather than return home and admit defeat, Sydney and Turk embark on the adventure of a lifetime in a world where fantasy and reality collide-where chickens ride ponies, where golf putters are magic, and where children survive on the strength of their own wits. In The Royal Woods, you never know what will happen next.

This book looks at the functioning and symbolic meanings of the royal preserves, parks, and forests in a transitional period in Portuguese political regimes: at the end of the Ancien Regime and in the aftermath of the first liberal revolution in Portugal (1821), from 1777 to 1824.The aim is to understand how life developed in royal preserves before and after the Liberal Revolution in Portugal. The majority of academic work produced before 1998 focused on hunting and royal preserves in England, Spain or France. If the classic Whigs and Hunters, by E. P. Thompson, proclaimed the prerogatives of aristocracy for the British aristocratic mastering of property rights, status and ethos, other contributions of the preserves regime, in the mastering of social order and in the attempt to balance or master powers, can be added, for other regions in Europe. In this case, the focus is on Portugal.

The ideas and practices that comprise “conservation” are often assumed to have arisen within the last two centuries. However, while conservation today has been undeniably entwined with processes of modernity, its historical roots run much deeper. Considering a variety of preindustrial European settings, this book assembles case studies from the medieval and early modern eras to demonstrate that practices like those advocated by modern conservationists were far more widespread and intentional than is widely acknowledged. As the first book-length treatment of the subject, Conservation’s Roots provides broad social, historical, and environmental context for the emergence of the nineteenth-century conservation movement.

Ian K. Steele's pioneering work in imperial and early North American history was a pivotal contribution to the establishment of Atlantic history as a field. His study of a unified English - and later British - Atlantic challenged American exceptionalism and encouraged the current wave of interest in Atlantic studies.
