This thesis documents almost twenty years of the author’s work on the development and implementation of a new approach to holistic community development in remote and disadvantaged villages in Nepal. It describes the theoretical basis of the work, the main research activities, and the practical outcomes of the implemented programs. One of the fundamental cornerstones of holistic community development is the provision of appropriate and sustainable solutions for the long-term development of local communities. This requires that people’s own identified needs be recognized and addressed in partnership with them in holistic ways. The author explains the many synergies that result from this holistic approach to community development. Another cornerstone of his approach is to utilise the communities’ locally available renewable resources for long-term sustainable development. One of the key findings of the thesis is that improved access to energy services, such as cooking with a smokeless metal stove in a clean indoor environment, basic indoor lighting, and increased food production and safe food storage (through a greenhouse and a solar drier respectively), need to be at the very heart of any long-term holistic community development project. The thesis demonstrates that tapping into locally available renewable energy resources and converting them, through contextualized and locally manufactured renewable energy technologies, has a central role in long-term holistic community development programs. Such programs are successful because they provide both appropriate technologies and life-changing experiences for the local users involved.

Green Energy is increasingly becoming an important component for all individuals and governments of the world. According to Brundtland Commission Report (Our Common Future, 1987) of United Nations states: sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Green Energy is widely considered as Sustainable Energy/ Re-newable Energy which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs. In the global movement of Green Energy Sustainable Renewable Energy, most of the countries decided to be a part of this movement of saving our planet and our future generation. This effort is supported by eleven international authors who are experts in their respective fields. The output is this book Green Energy. This book is comprises of six chapters.The first chapter discusses how global temperature can be controlled with the help of technology. Second chapter explains about green buildings. It explains about costs and benefits of green houses. Third chapter discusses about biofuels. Fourth chapter discusses about technical feasibility of Renewable Electricity Generation in Nunavut. Fifth chapter presents a summary of 15 years of grass root project experience in Partnership with impoverished, remote high altitude communities in the Nepal Himalayas. Sixth chapter argues that, contrary to popular belief, sustainable sources, in particular solar power, are capable of providing allthe energy the Europe needs at reasonable cost.

This book contains selected papers presented during technical and plenary sessions at the World Renewable Energy Congress, the world’s premier conference on renewable energy and sustainable development. All papers were rigorously peer reviewed.The Congress, held at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia from February 5 -9, 2017, with the theme of “Transition Towards 100% Renewable Energy”, featured keynote speakers and parallel technical sessions highlighting technical, policy, and investment progress towards achieving 100% renewable energy ranging in scale from households to cities to large regions, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities transforming the global energy systems. The book highlights contributions from thought leaders involved in the supply, distribution, consumption, and development of sustainable energy sources.

Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Sustainable energy access planning (SEAP) plays a vital role when it comes to ensuring energy access for poor households particularly in Nepal's Pyuthan district. SEAP identifies the needed resources and investments for sustainable energy in the district. This case study, supported by the Asian Development Bank, presents the application of a SEAP framework for developing cost-effective energy plans for Pyuthan district. It also highlights the benefits of access to cleaner energy in terms of social well-being, reduction in the emission of local pollutants and greenhouse gas, and reducing energy inequality.

This book considers the impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership [TPP] on intellectual property and trade. The book focuses upon the debate over copyright law, intermediary liability, and technological protection measures. The text examines the negotiations over trade mark law, cybersquatting, geographical indications and the plain packaging of tobacco products. It explores the debate over patent law and access to essential medicines, data protection and biologics, and the protection of trade secrets. In addition, the book investigates the treatment of Indigenous intellectual property, access to genetic resources, and plant breeders’ rights.

The evidence suggests that many solar programs are being designed and implemented in isolation and without reliance on published guidelines or the experience gained by others. The conclusion is obvious: the likelihood of a program being successful would be greatly improved if program implementers were made more aware of best practice guidelines and of the lessons and experience learned by others in implementing previous programs. Furthermore, the best practice guidelines not only need to be readily available but need to describe the stages, issues and the stakeholders’ roles in designing and implementing a SHS program. This book showcases a detailed road map that has been developed for the implementation of rural electrification projects in developing countries using solar PV. Features of this book will be case studies derived from personal participatory observation of the authors on Solar Home Systems, their impact, their advantages and disadvantages and their operation.

This book highlights the role that renewable energy can play in achieving sustainable development.
