Focuses on the molecular and populational aspects of the insects (mosquitoes, midges, black flies, etc.) and acarines (ticks and mites) that serve as transmitters (vectors) of disease agents and is designed to stimulate further studies worldwide. Vector-borne diseases continue to be among the most intractable infectious diseases for both humans and livestock, despite a hundred years of research and control efforts. Of the six diseases considered by the World Health Organisation to be the greatest threat to human health, only one is not vector-borne. Progress in alleviating their harmful effects is likely to come through fundamental studies utilising molecular techniques and epidemiological methods that have been developed over the past fifteen years. These methods are discussed in the book. The forty contributors to this volume are leading, active investigators in vectors and the disease agents they transmit.

African swine fever (ASF) is a disease with a mortality rate close to 100 percent. There is no vaccine and no conventional treatment against the disease. To reduce the effects caused by ASF outbreaks, optimal response mechanisms against probable ASF emergency disease situations need to be planned and rehearsed so that the disease can be controlled and eradicated in the most rapid and cost-effective way. These plans should be refined from time to time through simulation exercises and personnel should be trained in their individual roles and responsibilities. This manual provides information on the nature of ASF, and on the principles of, and strategic options for its prevention, control and elimination. Guidelines are given for individual countries threatened by ASF to formulate their own national policy on control and eradication of a possible incursion of the disease. The manual identifies both personnel and equipment and other facilities that are needed in a national ASF contingency plan. An outline of the suggested format and contents of a national contingency plan is also provided as a guide, which can be modified to suit the needs and circumstances of individual countries.

Skin Diseases of Cattle in the Tropics: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment is a clinical and practical guide to help animal scientists, field veterinarians, veterinary students, and technicians make appropriate and differential diagnoses. It features quizzes of clinical cases, along with multiple images of characteristic lesions and laboratory findings of major skin diseases (and diseases with skin manifestations) that are prevalent in tropical areas, notably the Sub-Saharan African countries. This self-learning and easy-to-use instructional guide, a unique offering in the field of animal science and veterinary medicine, provides essential and foundational information about relevant skin conditions that are followed by illustrated flow charts of laboratory diagnoses and summaries of respective diseases. This title makes the subject accessible for practicing veterinarians and animal scientists, and is particularly useful for those who have neither seen nor had the chance to see these diseases in the field or clinics. Such diseases are important not only in the tropics, but may be encountered in many countries in subtropical and temperate zones. - Features more than 100 images of lesions and laboratory findings of major skin diseases and diseases with skin manifestations that are prevalent in tropical areas - Includes clinical-case quizzes for self-directed learning - Covers laboratory diagnosis, clinical presentations, and the summary of all important facts about the disease, including their etiology
