Excerpt from The Respective Standpoints of Psychology and Logic Metaphysics and epistemology are today regarded as but two modes of approach to the same problem; the consideration Of the nature, source, and function of knowledge involves the determination Of the nature Of reality and the relation of thought to it. Metaphysics, on the other hand, cannot fix upon Thought, or a something-other, as a final and all-inclusive ultimate, ' without showing what disposition is to be made Of the other term with reference to it. In other words, the problem Of knowledge is no longer that Of investigating the forms and activities of pure thought, but is the knowledge-oi-reality problem. It is not so evident that logic, especially that known as instrumental, and more vaguely as pragmatic, is thus closely allied with epistemology and metaphysics. Yet it may be said that, despite increasing and seemingly implacable feuds among logicians as to other first principles Of logic, there is unanimous agreement, at present, that the judgment is the unit of the knowledge process, and that it can no longer be defined as the predication Of one idea Of another, either by way Of synthesis or analysis. Rather, every judgment is held to have existential import, or is to be defined as the mutual reference Of an ideal content, as predicate. Excerpt from Principles of Psychology: In Three Parts It is now just four years since I published An Introduction to Mental Philosophy, which may be considered as a suitable preparation for the present Work. It appeared to me that before entering upon the thorny paths of metaphysical ground, it was highly desirable to pave the way by A Philosophical Vocabulary, which should endeavour to fix the meaning of the principal terms used in Philosophy, not in Mental Philo sophy only, but in every inquiry worthy of that name. Such are the terms, substance, qual ity, quantity, relation, cause and effect, law OF nature, principle, hypothesis and theory, science, and philosophy itself. Accordingly, such a Philosophical Vocabulary forms the First Part of the Introduction, which, but for the Second Part, which treats particularly of Mental Philosophy, might have been styled an Introduction to Philosophy in general. Excerpt from The Elements of the Psychology of Cognition The present work professes to be an introduction to a very interesting and important subject of study, -the psychology of the intellectual part of the human mind. It is designed principally for the use of students who are beginning their philosophical studies, and the writer has therefore endeavoured to express himself in as clear and simple language as possible. But while intended primarily for this class of readers, it is hoped that those who have already made the acquaintance of the subject will find something to interest them.
