Excerpt from First Science Book: Physics and Chemistry This book is designed to serve as an introduction to scientific study, and at the same time to present a thorough course in the science of common phenomena. Whether the pupil has been prepared by courses in nature study or by his independent observation of things about him, he will find many subjects that are already known to him here treated in a manner which should explain the mysteries and clarify his ideas. Finishing this course, the pupil should be well fitted to take up the science studies of preparatory schools, and should have a store of serviceable knowledge. The Reaction from Science by William Joseph Madden contextualizes religious reunion and pointedly questions the growing strand of agnostic science. William Joseph Madden uses riveting prose to formulate a structured argument against agnostic science and its propagators. The book has been divided into numerous short chapters each of which build a compelling case for disagreement with the agnostic school of thought. There is a logical flow in the construction of the argument as the author postulates the signs for reaction, important questions that remained unanswered by agnosticism and finally the way forward. William Joseph Madden uses wit and sarcasm to perfection which can be noticed in the underlying tone of this book. While keeping a check on undue assault, a scathing critique somehow emerges from the depths of this work and this is perhaps the most intriguing aspect of The Reaction from Science. As the title suggests, the author does full justice to the term reaction by combining well researched facts and observations yet keeping a strong grip on the use of hard hitting submissions to make his point. As the questions being answered in The Reaction from Science cover a rather large spectrum of literature and philosophy, it would only be natural to assume a rather long piece of work. However, this book is by no means long and that is perhaps its strongest point. The author is successful is creating an impact even in brevity. Suitable for all palates, The Reaction from Science is by all means relevant to current debates revolving around science and religion and makes for an excellent read for students, scholars and casual readers alike. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Chemical Reactions IN this introduction I have endeavored to supply the student with whatever may be of service in assisting him to a clear comprehension of chemical processes. I have not restricted myself, therefore, to a mere expression of the reactions by equations, but have preceded these with the shortest possible presentation of the most important considerations which form the foundation of our present theoretical views. Excerpt from Chemical Reactions: Their Theory and Mechanism For practical reasons, it was not possible for Professor Nelson and the writer to add to the experimental data from the newer point of view, but it seemed at the time as if sufficient facts were recorded in the literature to permit of a conclusive test of the theory. The electron conception of valence has now apparently been widely accepted. At the same time, a number of chemists still speak of polar and non-polar valences. To the writer, no useful purpose is served by such a distinction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reagents and Reactions It is a common practice, more especially in foreign scientific literature, to refer to a reaction by the name of the chemist who first applied it, although, in many cases, the reaction may hardly be known outside the country of its origin. It was, therefore, a good idea on the part of Dr. Tognoli to gather together in a convenient form most of the important chemical reactions, so that the chemist has only to refer to the alphabetical list to refresh his memory upon the details of any particular test. Some of the reactions described in the original are practically obsolete, but I have retained them in the translation, since they are still mentioned in papers on the subjects with which they are concerned. I have also added a number of the more important reactions which were not included in the Italian edition.
