Excerpt from The Railway Revolution in Mexico The first charter for a railway in Mexico was granted in 1837. It covered the distance between the City of Mexico and Vera Cruz, with a branch to Puebla. But the project involved in this concession was not carried out. Several years later, however, under a new charter, a railway connecting these cities was built, and for many years, while it controlled the traffic between the capital and the principal port of the Gulf coast, it possessed economic advantages which no other Mexican railway has had. The early movement was not prophetic of an early development; the greater part of the existing railways of Mexico have been built in the last two decades. At present they constitute a well-planned, well-equipped, and efficiently manned system of rapid transportation, which embraces 6,687 miles of track, operates 632 locomotives, 1,032 passenger cars, 11,331 freight cars, and reaches all of the important centers of population. The notes embraced in the following pages were made, with the exception of a few paragraphs, during a vacation journey extending over nearly all the railway lines of Mexico, and they are here printed with no essential modification of the form in which they were originally set down. Excerpt from The Mexican National Railway: Palmer-Sullivan Concession Its population in 1876 was and is now something greater. It is, therefore, a little more populous than the two kingdoms of Belgium and Holland. Or, to seek another European illustration, it is nearly equal to the combined populations of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Bulgaria. It is this magnificent domain (as yet, substantially, virgin as a railway field) which The Mexican National Railway is entering from the United States, and simultaneously building northward and westward from the central capital' of Mexico. And at Manzanillo eastward from the Pacific Coast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
