Winner of the British Psychological Society Book Award for Best Textbook An instructive and accessible account of the psychological development of children aged 0-2 years and how it can be supported by social relationships. The first two years are critical in a child's development, influencing what happens in later childhood and even adulthood. Yet how best to support that early development is not always easy to grasp. Now help is at hand with this expert guide on the care of children through these essential years. Based on the latest research, with its wealth of picture sequences and clear explanations, this book shows how the development of young children's social understanding, attachments, self-control and intelligence can be supported through their relationships.

The author deals with motor development, perception, cognition, and social development and considers the ways in which distinctions among these abilities are arbitrary and hinder evolution of an adequate account of infancy. Field (pediatrics, psychology, and psychiatry, U. of Miami School of Medicine) describes the recent research, focusing primarily on social- emotional development, but also considering the perceptual, cognitive, and motor development of the infant. She includes an account of the remarkable development of the fetus and a chapter on infants at risk. Paper edition (unseen), $7.95. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

What do infants know? What do they feel, and how do they come to understand what’s happening around them? How do they begin to construe others as persons with feelings and intentions? These questions inspire this remarkable new look at the infant’s world. The short answer? Infants are much more sophisticated perceivers, feelers, and thinkers of their world than we may think. In this lively book, Philippe Rochat makes a case for an ecological approach to human development. Looking at the ecological niche infants occupy, he describes how infants develop capabilities and conceptual understanding in relation to three interconnected domains: the self, objects, and other people. Drawing on the great body of contemporary “competent infant” research, Rochat offers a thoughtful overview of many current, controversial topics, from neonatal imitation to early numeracy, to the development of self-awareness. In a provocative conclusion, he describes infancy as a series of key transitions—so dramatic that they are sometimes called “revolutions”—and maps out the processes that impel development. Offering a unifying theoretical vision of the vast research of recent years, The Infant’s World is an inspiring introduction to the liveliest area of modern psychology.

An account of recent research into infant development, the text includes 13 chapters writen by British and North American infancy researchers. Although the chapters are organized along conventional lines into sections on perceptual, cognitive and social development, the emphasis (appearing both within chapters and in the linking editorial passages within sections) is on links between perceptual, cognitive and social aspects of development. Thus, new findings on infant perception are related to both old and new accounts of cognitive developemnt, and links are drawn between these topics and the development of social interaction and language. Attention is given to both traditional approaches such as Piagetian theory, and more recent approaches such as direct perception and dynamic systems theory. There is also a chapter devoted to interpreting infant development from a psychoanalytic perspective.
