Delve into the mysteries of the human mind in this spellbinding tale from D.H. Lawrence, the masterful author responsible for beloved novels such as Sons and Lovers and Women in Love. Leaving behind the sensual fare for which he is best known, Lawrence focuses in this story on the conflict that emerges between an aristocratic officer and his subordinate. "The Prussian Officer" packs the psychodrama and complexity of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment into a concise and compelling tale.

Twelve stories of remarkable power and sensitivity from one of Britain's great modernists His first published collection, these twelve stories were written between 1907 and 1914, during a crucial period of development for Lawrence from which he emerged a leading figure of the modernist movement. Reaching new levels of feeling and experience, these stories range from the tale of a Prussian officer who drives his orderly towards a bloody reckoning, to the strangely exotic elements of 'A Fragment of Stained Glass', and the divisions within society and conflicts of the heart that form the central themes of 'Daughters of a Vicar'. Interweaving individual lives, their happiness, failures and defeats, with the profound forces of nature, Lawrence has created stories of remarkable power and sensitivity. This Penguin edition reproduces the newly established Cambridge text, which is based on Lawrence's manuscripts, typescripts and corrected proofs. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The Prussian Officer and Other Stories is a collection of early short stories by D. H. Lawrence which Duckworth, his London publisher, brought out on 26 November 1914. An American edition was produced by B W Huebsch in 1916. The stories collected in this volume are: The Prussian Officer The Thorn in the Flesh Daughters of the Vicar A Fragment of Stained Glass The Shades of Spring Second Best The Shadow in the Rose Garden Goose Fair The White Stocking A Sick Collier The Christening Odour of Chrysanthemums The first narrative of The Prussian Officer and Other Stories is The Prussian Officer and tells the narrative of Captain and his orderly. Having wasted his youth with gambling, the captain has been left with only his military career, and though he has taken on mistresses throughout his life, he remains single. His young orderly is involved in a relationship with a young woman, and the captain, feeling sexual tension with regards to the young man, prevents the orderly from engaging in the relationship by taking up his evenings. These evenings lead to the captain abusing his orderly and leaving large, painful bruises on his thighs, making it hard for the orderly to walk. Whilst isolated in a forest during manoeuvres, the orderly takes out murderous revenge on the captain, but finds himself in a daze seemingly due both to the pain of the bruises and thirst. The orderly eventually collapses and dies in the hospital shortly there after. The corpses of the two men lay side by side. (wikipedia.org) Review by Sara Benovc: The Prussian Officer is one of the most moving and striking stories I have ever read. The imagery and emotion that the reader expiriences will not soon be forgotten.
