Excerpt from The Principles of English Syntax This little book appears in response to many urgent requests from friends who, at some time, have been under the author's tuition or supervision, and who believe, with him, that instruction in English grammar may be much simplified; that often too much time is spent in going over unimportant details in parsing and analysis; and that the ability to illustrate synthetically every principle of syntax, and to correct any violation thereof, is of greater value than is generally considered. Excerpt from The Principles of English Grammar The author does not claim absolute perfection in the pre sent work; but he does claim that, while he has embodied in this work the best that he could obtain from other sources, he has presented, in a clearer, fuller light, the science of the English language, than any other one author of his acquaintance. Excerpt from The First Part of the American System of English Syntax, Vol. 1 of 3: Developing the Constructive Principles of the English Language, or Phrenod Youth is the season designed by nature for the formation of the mind - the expansion of the soul. But man, mistaken man, has contradicted this, and thus brought himself to a state so feeble that he can hardly secure rights, or enjoy his freedom! It is not pretended that American children are deprived of schools; but it is verily believed that they nearly waste their precious childhood by a false system of teaching.\ Is it too late for reform? If not, let it be commenced in the primary'schools - let the language be under stood by the teachers, and by them thoroughly taught to their pupils. Let the institutions in which youth complete their education, give attention to their own tongue: too much tima is devoted to other languages. American statesmen must be acquainted hath their own language or this republic-2's of shhrt duration. Even the constitution of the United States cannot be understood by two impartial states men ih the same way. To the man of circumscribed views, innovation seems to imply a contempt for all former systems, and a total want of respect for their authors. But he who has seen the clouds of literary night dissipate before the sun of improvement, the region of science grow lighter and lighter, and the horizon of truth extend from time to time, by repeated changes, will soon overcome his attachment to absurd forms, and gladly promote that species of innovation, which tends to build systems upon truth, and p'hz'loso ay. Excerpt from The Principles of English Grammar: The Substance of All the Most Approved English Grammars Extant, Briefly Defined, and Neatly Arranged Orthography is mentioned rather for the sake of order, than from a conviction of its utility; for, in my opinion, to occupy thirty or forty pages of a Grammar in defining the sounds of the alphabet, is quite preposterous. On Etymology I have lefl much to be remarked by the teacher in the time of teaching. My reason for doing this is, that children, when by themselves, labour more to have the words of their book imprinted on their memories, than to have the meaning fixed in their minds; but, on the contrary, when the teacher addresses them viva voce, they naturally strive rather to comprehend his meaning, than to remember his exact expressions. In pursuance of this idea, the first part of this little volume has been thrown into a form more resembling heads of Lectures on Grammar, than a complete elucidation of the subject. That the teacher, however, may not be always under the necessity of having recourse to his memory to supply the deficiencies, the most remarkable observations have been subjoined at the bottom of the page, to which the pupils themselves may occasionally be referred.
