"This full-color, one-volume dictionary provides a guide through the maze of twentieth-century art. Including artists, movements, photographers, techniques, styles, and turn-of-the-century precursors, The Prestel Dictionary of Art and Artists in the 20th Century draws on the expertise of over sixty art historians to give a comprehensive description and interpretation of the last artistic century. Concise entries, all specially commissioned for this book, and many illustrated with works in color, cover the questions raised by encounters with modern art. Cross-references provide links between artists, concepts, and techniques, and a selected bibliography gives the latest and best books for further reading."--Rabat de la jaquette.

Henri Michaux is both a recognised poet and visual artist, arguably one of the greatest ‘double artists’ of the twentieth century. This book presents the first detailed examination of a particular interdisciplinary aspect of his production, namely, the innovative experimentation with signs contained in four works: Mouvements, Par la voie des rythmes, Saisir and Par des traits. Questions arise concerning their literary and visual status as, in their attempt to render interior rhythm and dynamism, they occupy an interstitial space between writing and drawing, between the book and the canvas, between the Western alphabet and Chinese characters. This study addresses these questions by analysing the conception, production and reception of Michaux’s signs and the literary and artistic contexts in which they were produced.

"Takes a detailed look at the flow of ideas between the twin worlds of art and fashion, chronicling their close relationship. It charts a history of ideas highlighting key moments, from the Renaissance to the present day, when art and fashion interacted and influenced each other... This close synergy between art and fashion has continued into the 21st century, with artists working with themes that explore clothes and the body, and top fashion designers feted in lavish museum exhibitions."-- Back cover.
