To the English Catholic there is no class of religious edifices of greater interest than the ancient parish churches of this country. The are admirably suited to the present wants and necessities of the Church, nor is it possible to adopt, con sistently, any other models for the greater portion of our ecclesiastical buildings. Excerpt from A History of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England It is impossible to write on such subjects Without a moral tone, though direct moralizing may be avoided; unless indeed one can divest oneself of the feeling that they have a moral, and this is a power which the author by no means covets. He feels that the moral here is a wholesome one. Every instance in which we are brought into connection with those to Whom we owe our very existence as individuals, and as a nation, ought to make us feel our fellowship rather than our distance, and to teach us a proper estimate of ourselves and of our fathers. If there are many things which tend to lessen the influence even of our common Christianity in making us one with them, it will be useful to view them as engaged in a work, of which we in herit the advantages: and if we are superior, as we are and ought to be, to our remote ancestors, in many things, - in the arts of life, in habits of society, in soundness of objective faith and if we are quite as conscious of this as is consistent with charity and humility, it may be a wholesome exercise for us to pursue a study which will present them to us as unquestionably our superiors in one branch of the arts, and in one of the fruits of true religion. Excerpt from Recent English Ecclesiastical Architecture In planning a modern church it is the business of the architect to discover the general lines which will produce the best possible building under given conditions. Oi these conditions, those of cost, of situation, and of material are in very few cases exactly alike. But, as our churches are built for a definite purpose, there are certain conditions of space and arrangement which should in no case be disregarded. The publications referred to have left little to be said upon these matters, yet it is obvious from what we see every day that the existence of a fairly well understood set of rules does not ensure our possessing a worthy architecture. To secure this, our architects must cultivate their imagination and their sense of proportion; above all, they must take pains. The most hopeless of our modern churches are not so often the work of inexperienced men as the routine productions of diocesan surveyors' ofiices.
