Proceeding from Josef A. Jungmanns groundbreaking book of the same title, this volume gathers new work from fifteen renowned scholars on christological and trinitarian themes in prayer and worship. Eastern and Western traditions, Catholic and Protestant, ancient and contemporary are all represented in this record of the 2005 meeting of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. Collectively, these practitioners and theologians, from their varied settings, grapple with the competing ideas and expressions of christological and trinitarian doctrine in meaningful liturgy.

This is a study of the official prayer of the leader of the liturgical assembly that, as stated in the original edition, has "not only retained its validity but has also proved fruitful in the present liturgical and religious revival." Prayer, Jungmann states, is of its nature not bound to clearly determined forms and methods. Although rooted in history, liturgical prayer has also been shaped throughout history by our changing understanding of Christ, the center of our prayer. Jungmann inquires into liturgical prayer to determine to what extent and where this historical change or shaping actually occurred. Concentrating on prayer to Christ and prayer through Christ, he examines the place of Christ in different liturgies as they appear in the course of the Church's history. The result is a historical outline of the place occupied by the idea of Christ in liturgical prayer through the ages.

Starting from his Roman Catholic roots but working ecumenically, Bob Hurd explores this notion of spirituality in two parts. Part 1 places it in the theological framework of Creation-Grace-Incarnation, concluding that its specific form is participation in Christ’s self-emptying love of God, humankind, and creation. Part 2 investigates this kenotic spirituality liturgically, exploring how it comes to expression in the ritual stages of Gathering, Word, Eucharistic Prayer, Communion, and Sending. Comparing and contrasting each stage with corresponding patterns in various Protestant traditions, Hurd lays out the possibility of a spirituality common to Christians of various confessions.
