Excerpt from The Pitiful Plight of the Assyrian Christians in Persia and Kurdistan: Described From the Reports of Eye-WitnessesMay this little publication be not merely a record of bravery in bearing the cross, but also a call to aid in the rescue of the decimated survivors of an ancient communion, which preserves very closely in its liturgies the Aramaic spoken by our Lord. Once pioneers in the penetration of Asia by Christianity, for centuries in their mountain fastnesses they have been loyal defenders of their faith.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Who are the Assyrians and what role did they play in shaping modern Iraq? Were they simply bystanders, victims of collateral damage who played a passive role in the history of Iraq? And how have they negotiated their position throughout various periods of Iraq's state-building processes? This book details the narrative and history of Iraq in the 20th century and reinserts the Assyrian experience as an integral part of Iraq's broader contemporary historiography. It is the first comprehensive account to contextualize this native people's experience alongside the developmental processes of the modern Iraqi state. Using primary and secondary data, this book offers a nuanced exploration of the dynamics that have affected and determined the trajectory of the Assyrians' experience in 20th century Iraq.

This work is a detailed documentation of the Neo-Aramaic dialect spoken by Assyrian Christians in the region of Urmi (northwestern-Iran). It consists of four volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 are descriptions of the grammar of the dialect, including the phonology, morphology and syntax. Volume 3 contains a study of the lexicon, consisting of a series of lists of words in various lexical fields and a full dictionary with etymologies. Volume 4 contains transcriptions and translations of oral texts, including folktales and descriptions of culture and history. The Urmi dialect is the most important dialect among the Assyrian Christian communities, since it forms the basis of a widely-used literary form of Neo-Aramaic.
