Go on a journey with Dorian Gray, a young guy of unparalleled beauty and purity who is the subject of a photo that hides a dark secret. Under the cynical influence of Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian strives for eternal youth and beauty. His picture matures and rots in his place, signifying the rot of his soul, horrifyingly fulfilling this dream. Set against the backdrop of Victorian London, Wilde's novel is a brilliant exploration of vanity, moral duplicity, and the pursuit of beauty at a devastating cost. As Dorian delves deeper into a world of hedonism and selfish indulgence, his outward appearance remains unmarred by time or conscience, while the portrait hidden away becomes a grotesque testament to his inner depravity. With its meticulously chosen pictures, this version not only makes for an engrossing read, but it also deepens your comprehension of Wilde's masterwork with an incisive synopsis, an extensive character list, and an instructive biography of the author. This illustrated version of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a must-have for anybody who recognizes the ability of literature to challenge and captivate, regardless of whether you've been a longstanding devotee of Wilde or are just now getting into his work.

When Dorian Gray has his portrait painted, he is captivated by his own beauty. Set in fin-de-siecle London, this novel traces a path from the studio of painter Basil Hallward to the opium dens of the East End. Combining elements of the supernatural, aestheticism, and the Gothic, this is a work of fiction.

Introduction by Jeffrey Eugenides • Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Written in his distinctively dazzling manner, Oscar Wilde’s story of a fashionable young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty is the author’s most popular work. The tale of Dorian Gray’s moral disintegration caused a scandal when it first appeared in 1890, but though Wilde was attacked for the novel’s corrupting influence, he responded that there is, in fact, “a terrible moral in Dorian Gray.” Just a few years later, the book and the aesthetic/moral dilemma it presented became issues in the trials occasioned by Wilde’s homosexual liaisons, which resulted in his imprisonment. Of Dorian Gray’s relationship to autobiography, Wilde noted in a letter, “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps.”
