It is now more carefully stated that James Phips is found settled as a ship-wright near the mouth of the Kennebec River, a little before 1650. But the fact which interests us for the moment is that he came from Bristol, England. He was an Eng lishman. Although we have not been able to trace back his English ancestry, we do possess some information of a Phipps family near Bristol, England - to which family James Phips, our ancestor, was undoubtedly very closely related. Descendants of Joseph Phipps, Sr. (b. ca. 1730) whose family settled in Orange and Guilford Counties, North Carolina. The family can be traced back to Somersetshire and Tankersley, Yorkshire. Descendants later settled in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, and California.
