The book has yet in a comparatively short period made its way far beyond the limits of Germany, and though attacked in some quarters, has for the most part found great favour. The more have I felt it incumbent on me when the opportunity arose for a new edition to remove, as far as I was able, the defects of my work, to which I was by no means blind. What was most required was a considerably extended treatment of the first part of the work, the history of the philosophy of religion. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact.
