The real story behind a very private American fashion icon?Lilly Pulitzer Today, Lilly Pulitzer's iconic brand of clean-cut, vibrantly printed clothes called "Lillys" can be spotted everywhere. What began decades ago as a snob uniform in Palm Beach became a general fashion craze and, later, an American classic. In contrast to the high visibility of her brand, Lilly Pulitzer has largely kept her tumultuous personal story to herself. Bursting forth into glossy fame from a protected low-key world of great wealth and high society, through heartbreaks, treacheries, scandals, and losses, her life, told in detail here for the first time, is every bit as colorful and exciting as her designs. Offers a close-up of Palm Beach society, replete with tropical mischief, reckless indulgences and blatant infidelities as well as fascinating stories about the Pulitzer and Phipps families and their world of eccentrics, high achievers, intermarriages, and glamorous trendsetters Takes a fresh look at the Roxanne Pulitzer scandal and the atmosphere that fed it, and other episodes involving Lilly Pulitzer's family and social circle Traces the many ups-and-downs in Lilly Pulitzer's personal life as well as her business, which suffered a decline in the 1980s before its resurgent transformation into the thriving success it is today Includes 25 black-and-white photographs that bring Lilly Pulitzer's world to life Lilly of Paradise is must reading not only for fans of Lilly Pulitzer and her Lilly brand, but for anyone interested in a journey through the world of privilege and the life of a true American original.

Study drawings play a key role in the exploration and development of architecture in the early stages of design. Yet, these principal tools for graphic thinking have been largely taken for granted in the design professions. This guide brings study drawings into the foreground by analyzing actual drawings used by architects past and present. Architectural Study Drawings is the first source to provide a basis for understanding the primary means of graphic thinking used in the creation of these drawings. It also explains versatile applications of these drawings in architectural practice, teaching, and research. Evaluations of more than 80 drawings and diagrams demonstrate how study drawings are active participants in--rather than passive records of--the designer's graphic thinking. The author probes characteristics and properties of study drawings, in addition to how graphic and cognitive processes combine to guide design decision-making. Drawings of great past architects ranging from Leonardo da Vinci and Le Corbusier to Carlo Scarpa are analyzed. Excerpts are included from recent interviews with five contemporary architects--Joseph Esherick, Helmut Jahn, Robert Stern, Stanley Tigerman, and Peter Eisenman. Readers will learn from these masters how to enhance the value of study drawings in various design situations. Throughout, the author clarifies how theoretical aspects of study drawings relate to actual design practice. Detailed chapters discuss key topics such as: * The theoretical structure of study drawings * Applications for handmade drawings * How to make better use of current computer-aided design (CAD) systems * Examples of drafting room dialogue in practice that help improve design working processes Architectural Study Drawings offers valuable insights that can be applied on the drawing board in the school and office, in teaching of both media and design, and in research and development for CAD systems.

Young readers first met the Pigeon, a beleaguered bird desperate for a shot behind the wheel of a bus, in 2003. Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! went on to sell millions of copies, receive a Caldecott Honor, and spawn additional picture books, apps, games, and even silly bands. But did you know the Pigeon was born many years earlier in the pages of a sketchbook? In Don't Pigeonhole Me! Two Decades of the Mo Willems Sketchbook, readers are given a rare glimpse into the mind of the man the New York Times described as "The biggest new talent to emerge thus far in the '00s." Since he was a teenager, Mo has been creating characters and scribbling ideas in the pages of sketchbooks. In the early 1990s, he started self-publishing collections of his drawings, and The Mo Willems Sketchbook was created. What began as a calling card for his work has morphed over the years from a form of therapy, to an opportunity to explore and experiment, to a gift for friends and loved ones. But these sketchbooks have always been (and continue to be) the well from which Mo draws ideas and inspiration. Featuring a foreword by Eric Carle and an introduction by Mo, this volume includes all twenty sketchbooks from the last two decades. Don't Pigeonhole Me! reveals the author/illustrator at his most truthful, most experimental, most grown-up. Most Mo. Want to know where ideas come from? Look inside.
