TheConcise Oxford Chronology of English Literaturepresents a comprehensive year-by-year digest of 15,000 significant and representative works of literature published in English by British authors from 1474 to the present day. The greats sit alongside long forgotten gems, the trivial, the inspirational, and the unusual, all equally worthy of remembrance. An ideal resource for students and academics of English literature. The main chronology is supplemented by three indexes. An author index allows readers to view the literary output of any given author in chronological order, an index of periodicals gives a short overview of periodicals published during the period covered, and there is also an index of anonymous titles. This edition has been updated to include works of literature from 2002 and 2003.

The Short Oxford History of English Literature 2e provides a comprehensive beginners guide to the literature of the British Isles from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day in one volume. This book is an established introduction to English literature, with separate chapters tracing the development from Beowulf to the post-modern fictions of Seamus Heaney and Angela Carter including a new section on late 20th century prose and British and Irish poetry of the 60s. The Historyprovides detailed discussion of Old and Middle English literature, the Renaissance, Shakespeare, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Romantics, Victorian and Edwardian literature, Modernism, and post-war writing. Discussions of key writers and works from Anselm and Chaucer to Spenser andBunyan, and from Swift and Johnson to Dickens and DH Lawrence, are combined with analysis of the impact on literature of contemporary political, social, and intellectual developments. The book includes Scottish, Irish, and Welsh writers, and it asks about the future of the canon in the light of thefragmented condition of British writing in the post-imperial period. Lively, accessible, and up-to-date, The Short Oxford History of English Literature will be an invaluable source for general readers and a key textbook for sixth-form students, first year undergraduates, and foreign students of English literature.

Thirty thousand works by 4,000 authors range from 1474-2000. Works are mostly by British authors published in Britain, but also included are exceptions made for foreign authors who have made their home in Britain (Henry James and V.S. Naipaul), and for authors of the colonial period who published principally with British houses. In addition to the chronology, the indexes in the second volume allow searches by author, translated author, and title. Content is dominated by works of the imagination (poetry, drama, novels, and short stories); but biographies, letters, criticism, philosophical and religious texts, and reference works are also covered. The first volume, the chronology, begins in 1474 with a work of fiction, Wm. Caxton's The Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye. The entry conveys that this was the first book printed by Caxton in English, probably in Bruges by Caxton's company, W. Caxton and C. Mansion, and brought out in subsequent editions in 1502, 1553, 1597. Also shown is that Caxton was born around 1422 and alive at the time of publication (the birth year allows a calculation of the author's age at the time of publication). Other entries provide the same kind of information. c. Book News Inc.
