IN a beautiful distant kingdom, in which the sun never goes down on its everlasting green gardens, ruled, from the beginning of time even to the present day, Queen Phantasie. With full hands, she used to distribute the abundance of her blessings among her subjects. She did this for many hundreds of years, and was beloved and respected by all who knew her. The heart of the Queen, however, was too great to allow her to stop at her own land with her charities. One day a messenger brought her news of a place called Earth. There she heard that men lived there; who passed their lives in sorrowful seriousness, in the midst of care and toil. In the royal attire of her everlasting youth and beauty, the Queen descended upon the earth. Unto these she sent the finest gifts from her kingdom, and ever since the beauteous Queen came through the fields of earth, men were merry at their labours, and happy in their seriousness. Her children, she also sent forth to bring happiness to all mankind. ….and so the scene is set for the stories and tales in the Oriental Story Book. A beautiful collectible hardcover edition of the father of Korean American literature's "wonderfully resplendent evocation of a newcomer's America" (Chang-rae Lee, author of Native Speaker) A Penguin Vitae Edition Having fled Japanese-occupied Korea for the gleaming promise of the United States with nothing but four dollars and a suitcase full of Shakespeare to his name, the young, idealistic Chungpa Han arrives in a New York teeming with expatriates, businessmen, students, scholars, and indigents. Struggling to support his studies, he travels throughout the United States and Canada, becoming by turns a traveling salesman, a domestic worker, and a farmer, and observing along the way the idealism, greed, and shifting values of the industrializing twentieth century. Part picaresque adventure, part shrewd social commentary, East Goes West casts a sharply satirical eye on the demands and perils of assimilation. It is a masterpiece not only of Asian American literature but also of American literature. Penguin Vitae―loosely translated as "Penguin of one's life"―is a deluxe hardcover series from Penguin Classics celebrating a dynamic and diverse landscape of classic fiction and nonfiction from seventy-five years of classics publishing. Penguin Vitae provides readers with beautifully designed classics that have shaped the course of their lives, and welcomes new readers to discover these literary gifts of personal inspiration, intellectual engagement, and creative originality.

This is a classic story of early mankind. Og is a boy living in prehistory at a time when fire is just starting to be used. This is a time when the battle with carnivorous beasts occurred on a daily basis and rival tribes fought each other for supremacy. Survival is a key element in this story which can be used to show young people just how fortunate they are that they don’t have to face such dangers on a daily basis. Some of the 19 stories in this volume are: The Call of Cooked Meat, The Fire Demon, The Crack in the Earth, The First Camp Fire, In Which the Wolf Becomes Dog, At Bay With the Wolf Pack, Captive of the Tree People, The Python’s Coils. The first stories of Og, a cave boy who lived half a million years ago, appeared on the pages of Boys' Life, the Boy Scout magazine (USA), in December, 1921. They were written by Irving Crump [1887-1979], a writer and editor of Boys' Life, and in 1922 they were published as a book, "Og - Son of Fire." A US nation-wide radio show, "Og - Son of Fire" aired in 1934-35, hosted by Libby. It was originally aired by WBBM, Chicago and later by WABC, New York and then over the CBS radio network. It was accompanied by premiums and the publication of a Whitman "Big Little Book" in 1936 which was converted into a Dell comic in 1937. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Og Son of Fire, story, stories, young adult, folklore, young adult fiction, action, adventure, prehistory, carnivorous, animals, rival, tribe, survival, fight, outwit, danger, apes, blackness, boy, burn, canyon, cavern, caves, cliff, courage, crouch, Demon, fire, flames, forest, giant, Gog, hairy, huge, hunter, hunting, leader, man, meat, mountain, odor, odour, Og, pack, people, realization, Scar, stones, tiger, valley, Wab, warmth, wolf, wolves, woods, show of strength, unity, togetherness, baby, radio show, action comic, beasts, tree house, tree living, flee, scarper,

This second book in the Seraffyn cruising series begins with their arrival on the southwest coast of England where they coasted eastward, stopping where fancy held them, where good friends were made, to winter at Pooole, and work to pay for th enext leg of their voyage - toward the Baltic. Denmark, Sweden, Finland were full of welcoming and interesting people and an almost invisible bureacracy. But things were definitely different when they reached Poland were armed guards watched while the poeple greeted them with flowers, fruits and sweets. Their foray behind the Iron Curtain of the 1970's introduced them to some of the people who lead the Solidarity Movement, the force that eventually toppled the Soviet Union. You'll be right on board as they weather a fierce mast-under broach in a Baltic gale and through the wintery North Seas. Here is a feast for the fantiasies of stay-at-homes and a warm account of just two years of the lives of two people who have lived in a wide adventurous world for more than four decades. Their motto -- Go Small, Go Simple, Go Now has encouraged thousands of other sailors to take the plunge. And this book is an entertaining instruction manual on how to live a rich life on very little money. "Lin Pardey has, in her deceptively simple and fresh-faced style, told the story of an unusual and appealing marriage partnership, a speical way of life. Yachtsmen will enjoy the technical description of the problems of maneuvering in the tight harbours and unmapped channels...the perils of heavy seas in a small boat. But what is remarkable is that she can draw a nonsailor into these special subjects and make them as comprehensible and absorbing to a landlubber as they would be to someone about to set out on the same itinerary in a small boat of his own." “A confident One Thousand and One Nights for our present . . . Furious pop entertainment—full of sex, passion, violence, and magic.” —Slant magazine This is the story of the legendary City of Women, told through the tales of those who founded it, championed it, and made it flourish. When the city of Bessa undergoes a violent coup, its lazy, laissez-faire ruler, Bokhari Al-Bokhari, is replaced by the religious zealot Hakkim Mehdad. With little use for the pleasures of the flesh, Hakkim sends his predecessor’s 365 concubines to a neighboring sultan as a gift. But when the new sultan discovers the concubines are harboring Al-Bokhari’s youngest son—a child who might grow up to challenge his rule—he repents of his mercy and sends his soldiers to slaughter the seraglio down to the last woman and child. What he doesn’t count on is a concubine trained in the art of murder—or the courage and fortitude of the women who will rise up with her to forge their own city out of the unforgiving desert. It’s an undertaking beset with challenges: hunger and thirst, Hakkim’s relentless hate, and the struggle to make a place for themselves in a world determined to underestimate and undermine them. Through a mosaic of voices and tales, we learn of the women’s miraculous rise, their time of prosperity—and how they carried with them the seed of their own destruction. “A thrilling tale.” —Publishers Weekly “A masterful, engaging and utterly fascinating story by three wonderful writers.” —SFRevu.com “The Steel Seraglio brings its alternate world of struggle, politics and magic very much to life.” —Locus
