Of these French Officers, several served under Continental Commissions at the siege of Newport and Battle of Rhode Island. Excerpt from The French Alliance: Address Delivered Before the Rhode Island State Society of the Cincinnati, at the State House at Newport, Rhode Island, on July 4, 1904 In celebrating, therefore, this independence which was achieved, our thoughts naturally turn to the forces and influences which enabled it to be achieved. Among such influences there were several, them selves the result of great underlying causes, ap parent in the long retrospect of the previous history of Europe, which played important parts in the final series of events which culminated in our independence. Not alone, as it now seems, could Washington and the other statesmen and patriots and the brave and long-suffering armies of the col onies have won the victory. Many circumstances combined to aid them; and important among these were the relations which existed between France and Spain and between each of those powers and Eng land at the time of the American Revolution. Ashas been well said, even the stars in their courses seemed to fight for American independence. And one of the greatest of the influences which at the end enabled that independence to be won was the alliance which was made between the thirteen colo nies, or, as they called themselves, the thirteen United States, and the King of France in February, 1778. Excerpt from The Cincinnati Lancet and Observer, Vol. 6: October, 1863 Professor Blackman has told me that he had seen it in some of the London hospitals. But it is in military hospitals that it is most to be dreaded and where its most fearful ravages are recorded; and this, too, notwithstanding its etiology has been so thoroughly investigated and is so well understood by military surgeons. Baudens mentions that it broke out in one of the military hospitals in Africa with such intensity that every man who had undergone a great operation perish ed with it. We again find it prevailing to a fearful extent in the French hospitals in the Crimea, while the English were almost entire ly exempt from it: in my opinion, a severe reflection upon French intelligence and another evidence of the radically wrong system upon which the French medical staff is organized. Excerpt from Letters From Europe: Being Notes of a Tour Through England, France, and Switzerland Well, I may as well begin now. I reached New York city by the New York and Erie railroad. There was nothing noticeable ou-the way, except the diminished travel by this route from Dunkirk eastward. We had but two cars from Dunkirk - till we came within a Short distance of this city - and they were more than neces sary, as we only numbered about fifteen persons in each car. We were promised night-cars in the bill, but we saw nothing of them; indeed, the whole arrangement was less comfortable than we are accustomed to meet with between Cincinnati and Cleveland. Although I have traveled not a little of late years, I know of no railroad over which I pass with so much comfort and sense of safety as the Little Miami and Columbus road. Better cars I have met with, but more accuracy in ar rangement, more order in the company, more politeness in the conductors, I have not. Great credit, I Opine, is due to Mr. C., the Superintendent, and to.mr. S., the General Ticket Agent at Cincinnati. Such men are of value to cities.
