It is widely believed that a large proportion of greenhouse gas emissions originated anthropogenically from the use of fossil fuels with additional contributions coming from manufactured materials, deforestation, soil erosion, and agriculture (including livestock). The global society actively supports measures to create a flexible and low-carbon energy economy to attenuate climate change and its devastating environmental consequences. In this Special Issue, the recent advancements in the next-generation thermochemical conversion processes for solid fuels and renewable energies (e.g., the operational flexibility of co-combustion of biomass and lignite, integrated solar combined cycle power plants, and advanced gasification systems such as the sorption-enhanced gasification and the chemical looping gasification) were shown.

Welcome to Bavaria - Germany and to the INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR SIMULATION SYMPOSIUM AND MATHEMATICAL MODELLING WORKSHOP. A triennial international conference jointly promoted by Control.Data, GRS and SCS, which takes place at Schliersee, a small town near the Alps. The aim of the Symposium is to cover most of the aspects of nuclear modelling and simulation in theory and practice, to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience between different international research groups in this field, and to strengthen the international contact between developers and users of modelling and simulation techniques. On the occasion of the Symposium people of scientific and engineering disciplines will meet to discuss the state-of-the-art and future activities and developments. A large number of contributed papers has been strictly examined and selected by the papers committee to guarantee a high international standard. The book contains the accepted papers which will be presented at the Symposium. The papers have been classified according to the following topics: 1. HARDWARE TOOLS 2. SIMULATION-SOFTWARE-TOOLS 3. PLANT ANALYSER 4. REACTOR CORE 5. NUCLEAR WASTE Authors from 9 countries will meet at the Symposium. They work for Industrial Companies, Universities and the Research and Development Institutes so that a broad spectrum of simulation activities is covered: Theory and application, hardware and software, research and operations. The editor is greatful to the authors for making possible the publication of this book, and especially to WOLFGANG F. WERNEB, for the selection of the papers and the contribution to the success of the Symposium.

At the onset of the 21st century, we are searching for reliable and sustainable energy sources that have a potential to support growing economies developing at accelerated growth rates, technology advances improving quality of life and becoming available to larger and larger populations. The quest for robust sustainable energy supplies meeting the above constraints leads us to the nuclear power technology. Today's nuclear reactors are safe and highly efficient energy systems that offer electricity and a multitude of co-generation energy products ranging from potable water to heat for industrial applications. Catastrophic earthquake and tsunami events in Japan resulted in the nuclear accident that forced us to rethink our approach to nuclear safety, requirements and facilitated growing interests in designs, which can withstand natural disasters and avoid catastrophic consequences. This book is one in a series of books on nuclear power published by InTech. It consists of ten chapters on system simulations and operational aspects. Our book does not aim at a complete coverage or a broad range. Instead, the included chapters shine light at existing challenges, solutions and approaches. Authors hope to share ideas and findings so that new ideas and directions can potentially be developed focusing on operational characteristics of nuclear power plants. The consistent thread throughout all chapters is the "system-thinking" approach synthesizing provided information and ideas. The book targets everyone with interests in system simulations and nuclear power operational aspects as its potential readership groups - students, researchers and practitioners.
