Since RUTHERFORD MORISON left us with the concept of the Omentum being the 'abdominal policeman', clinicians have tacitly assumed that they know sufficient about the structure and function of this organ. However interest in the omentum and its relationship to clinical surgery has recently been develop ing. This book examines all aspects with special reference to surgery and should provide a welcome impetus in research and clinical practice. The editors and contributors have produced a book which is comprehensive and well illustrated and contains detailed refer ences to the important original sources - so essential in a work of this nature. It is written for those who wish to share the delight of acquiring knowledge - even about a comparatively humble organ - as well as for practical surgeons. Both will find ample information to arouse their interest and expand their surgical horizons in exciting ways of which they will almost certainly not have dreamt. I welcome a book of this calibre on a subject which deserves our increasing interest. I delight in the fact that it is dedicated to my friend and colleague MARTIN ALLGOWER.

The Omentum explores and assesses the comparatively new approach of using omental attachment in the treatment of a variety of neurologic diseases. Topics discussed include historical images and ideas connected with the greater omentum; angiogenesis and the greater omentum; implications for central nervous system injury of vasoactive chemicals in the omentum; effects of omental-derived lipid fractions on osseous vascularization and bone formation; cerebral revascularization by omental graft for moyamoya disease; omental transposition for treating the sequelae of viral encephalitis; experimental and clinical use of omental transposition for spinal cord pathology; and lumbo-omental shunt for treatment of communicating hydrocephalus. The effect of omentum transposition to the brain on regional cerebral blood flow in stroke patients and on delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to malignant brain tumors is also considered.

When analyzing the results of diagnostic imaging studies, the radiologist traditionally makes reference to particular features representative of normality or pathology. Most of these features are associated with images of the world around us. This pictorial issue contains nearly 400 illustrations and descriptions of more than 100 classic radiological signs of chest and abdominal diseases that are not named after authors but based on metaphors derived from contemplation of our environment. By correlating the results of computed tomography with these vivid descriptive images, readers will be able to memorize typical and often pathognomonic patterns of disease more quickly and more easily.
