Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 23: October 1926 So few of the Conservatory and School of Theology graduates replied, furnishing data or offering suggestions as to those departments, that it was deemed best by the committee to confine its study and recommendations pri marily to the College of Arts and Sciences. On the basis of a summary of the replies subcommittees1 were organized for the purpose of evaluating, of checking with trustees, officers, instructors, teachers, students, alumni, both of Oberlin and other colleges, and, finally, of preparing reports on the special fields of inquiry. Gen eral committee meetings attended by an average of 25 members were held in Oberlin in November, February and June. Special sub-committee meetings have been held in various centers during the course of the year. The report which follows is the result of the confer emees. It is made unanimously. It is offered not as a program of reform and, least of all, in a critical spirit. The members of the Committee have been conscious at every stage of their limitations and incapacity to pass with any degree of assurance on methods and policies of so highly organized and specialized an institution as a modern college. It is earnestly hoped that the contents of the report will be looked upon as merely suggestive and, above all else, as having sprung from a spirit of loyalty, continued interest and faith in the worth and achieve ments, both past and present, of the administration and faculty of Oberlin College. Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 23: January, 1927 We have had lately in our village an amusing example of this dislike. The village fathers decreed that all the sidewalks of Oberlin should be raised to a certain level and straightened. While I have no doubt that the leveling was ordered for reasons of utility, I suspect that What were believed to be aesthetic considerations determined the straightening. The result would have been, if the fathers had succeeded, that in a country where straight lines are as little called for as anywhere I know, we should have walked between parallels as rigid as those of a railway. But fortunately the track of the aboriginal cow was too much for us, and in the older parts of the village the curve of beauty still persists. We went so far, however, as to mutilate two or three fine old trees, not, I suppose, so as to endanger their health, but certainly so as to injure their beauty. Why, in a little town like this, a sidewalk should not be made to go round a beauti ful old tree I have never been able to understand. At any rate, we villagers spent what is called a tidy sum in order to tidy up our town, without noticeably im proving it. Excerpt from Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 28: November, 1931 The number of alumni children takes a decided drop from the number in the last three classes. Last year there were this year only 52 including both Col lege and Conservatory. There are 9 students though with advanced standing, one graduate student and two part - time students who can claim Oberlin paren tage. The 52 name 70 parents, 31 mothers and 39 fathers, who have trod the campus beneath the elms. The 23 women have an equal number of mothers and fathers, 15 each, but the 28 men have only 16 mothers to 24 fathers in this group. This raises an interesting question; why are more fathers sending their sons to Ober lin? Six women and 12 men had both parents attend Oberlin. Oi the women's parents 20 are gradu ates and 9 non - grads; of the men's par ents 27 are grads and 14 non - grads. The class of 1907 contributes 6 parents, that of 1911 five. Sixteen parents attended Oberlin prior to 1900, one dating back to 1881. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Oberlin Alumni Magazine, Vol. 27: January 1931 So rarely has anything interfered with our concert schedule that we have come to take all appearances as guaranteed. Alas, all flesh is grass! The other eve ning, with the chapel sold out even to standing room, the audience suffered a keen disappointment when Lawrence Tibbett was unable to sing for us. As he explained to the audience it was the first time in seven years that he had been unable to fill an engagement, but above a C his voice would not come, for he was suffering from laryngitis. Even with a capacity schedule of engagements he assured us that his manager and he would do every thing possible to arrange an early appear ance. We are happy that this has been arranged and we will have a return engagement on January 8. There are those who recall waiting one evening for Thibaud and finally hearing that his chauffeur had become lost en route from Cleveland and was near Berea. The audience heard Thibaud the next evening. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
