This is an annual listing of over 3,000 consumer-centered healthcare Web sites. As it is assumed that the reader already holds a functional knowledge of the Internet, site entries simply include an address and, in most cases, a brief description of site content. The editor's mission is to provide a search-efficient pathfinder to numerous healthcare sites. While other works have comparable aims, this seems to be the most comprehensive compilation of healthcare sites available. This fact, buttressed by ease of use, seems to ensure the editor's objective is met. Although this book is expressly geared to the layperson, one may also assume it has considerable relevance to various other actors in the healthcare field, including physicians, allied health specialists, nurses, and information professionals. The book is categorized, alphabetically, by subject area. Between a good recognition of what terms are most familiar to users, and a sound method of organization, the book is built well for efficiency. Moreover, a number of helpful Web site pictures are included. As for shortcomings, one must consider the curious omission of any discussion about the methodology for choosing sites. There is also no mention of non-English or bilingual healthcare sites. This good book is comprehensive, well organized, and would seem quite helpful to the inquisitive healthcare consumer. Notably, what the book loses in depth, it gains in reach. While other works such as Linden's Dr. Tom Linden's Guide to Online Medicine (McGraw-Hill, 1995) or Wood's Health Care Resources on the Internet: A Guide for Librarians and Health Care Consumers (The Haworth Press, 2000), provide greater depth on certain sites or types of sites, Davis' treatment of specific pages is, by design, cursory. In short, the editor does well with what he intends to do. Considering the nature of the Internet, the updating of this work is vital and intended by the editor to occur annually. -James R. Scott (Dowdy Review Services).
