This book provides assistance in preparing for and conducting screening or diagnostic ultrasound examinations of the fetal brain in all stages of pregnancy. Readers are provided with: abundantly illustrated descriptions of studies conducted on normal brain structures using all conventional and 3D/4D ultrasound techniques; a detailed description of the main structures of the brain; photographs of fetal pathology specimens that may be used to compare the results of imaging techniques with the anatomical reality; and practical advice and technical tips. The second part of this book presents a clear and informative overview of fetal brain pathologies, combining a wealth of detailed images and precise descriptions.

In recent years, Fetal MR has grown continually in importance, and the brain has become the main focus of investigation. However, we lack established standards and a good knowledge of the normal MR appearance. To fill this gap is the purpose of the first part of this book, which is an MR atlas of the cerebral development of the fetus. The second part is dedicated to cerebral pathologies. It includes, for each condition, a summary of the fundamental data, the imaging findings (US and MR) in correlation with neurofetopathology and/or postnatal imaging, and a brief perspective of the prognosis.

This book is designed primarily for anatomic pathologists to facilitate their task of accurately diagnosing embryos and fetuses. A detailed examination of the products of spontaneous and induced abortions is necessary for accurate genetic counseling and for establishing the risk for specific abnormalities or another spontaneous pregnancy loss in the future. The growing interest in the defects of early development reflects the profound change in general life-style. In the past, spontaneous abortions were considered a common, usually sporadic event in a patient's reproductive history. Only reassurance and encour agement were given to the patient and scant attention was paid to the detailed pathology of the abortus. Nowadays, however, as a result of reliable methods of contraception and of the availability of reliable prenatal diagnosis for chromosome abnormalities more frequent in advanced maternal age, significant numbers of parents plan to have pregnan cies later in their reproductive life. Consequently, in a case of spontaneous abortion, the question of "cause" and of "future risk" of recurrence of abortion or an abnormal infant is particularly important. In the era of more elaborate and accurate prenatal diagnostic tests, the pathologist examining products of conception has a primary responsibility to detect, in both spontaneous and induced abortions, any developmental abnormality that would indicate an increased risk of multifactorial, chromosomal, and single gene disorders in a subsequent child.

Diagnosis, Management and Modeling of Neurodevelopmental Disorders: The Neuroscience of Development is a comprehensive reference on the diagnosis and management of neurodevelopment and associated disorders. This book discusses the mechanisms underlying neurological development and provides readers with a detailed introduction to the neural connections and complexities in biological circuitries, as well as the interactions between genetics, epigenetics and other micro-environmental processes. It also examines pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions of development-related conditions. Factors Affecting Neurodevelopment: Genetics, Neurology, Behavior, and Diet is a comprehensive reference on the genetic and behavioral features associated with proper and abnormal development. This book discusses the mechanisms underlying neurological development and provides readers with a detailed introduction to the neural connections and complexities in biological circuitries, as well as the physiological, behavioral, molecular, and cellular features of neurodevelopment. It also examines in vitro and in vivo modelling of development with stem cells and model systems.Diagnosis, Management and Modeling of Neurodevelopmental Disorders: The Neuroscience Of Development: - Provides the most comprehensive coverage of the broad range of topics related to the neuroscience of development - Features sections on diagnosis and biomarkers - Contains in each chapter an abstract, key facts, mini dictionary of terms, and summary points to aid in understanding - Focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders and environmental factors that influence neural development - Includes more than 500 illustrations and tables Factors Affecting Neurodevelopment: Genetics, Neurology, Behavior, and Diet: - Provides the most comprehensive coverage of the broad range of topics related to the neuroscience of development - Features sections on the genetics of developmental conditions and accompanying behavior - Contains in each chapter an abstract, key facts, mini dictionary of terms, and summary points to aid in understanding - Focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders and environmental factors that influence neural development - Includes more than 500 illustrations and tables
