In a first edition review published in the International Journal of Heat & Mass Transfer, Sir Owen Saunders of the Imperial College of London stated: "THE NEW HEAT TRANSFER makes intriguing reading... It will do any worker in the field good to read this book...(which contains) much useful & stimulating material. It is hoped that many will read (THE NEW HEAT TRANSFER) carefully, & that (its) influence will be brought to bear on the whole community of heat transfer workers...." Although the empirical treatment of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media is over a century old, only in the last three decades has the transport in these heterogeneous systems been addressed in detail. So far, single-phase flows in porous media have been treated or at least formulated satisfactorily, while the subject of two-phase flow and the related heat-transfer in porous media is still in its infancy. This book identifies the principles of transport in porous media and compares the avalaible predictions based on theoretical treatments of various transport mechanisms with the existing experimental results. The theoretical treatment is based on the volume-averaging of the momentum and energy equations with the closure conditions necessary for obtaining solutions. While emphasizing a basic understanding of heat transfer in porous media, this book does not ignore the need for predictive tools; whenever a rigorous theoretical treatment of a phenomena is not avaliable, semi-empirical and empirical treatments are given.

Advances in Heat Transfer fills the information gap between regularly scheduled journals and university level textbooks by providing in-depth review articles over a broader scope than in journals or texts. The articles, which serve as a broad review for experts in the field, will also be of great interest to non-specialists who need to keep up-to- date with the results of the latest research. It is essential reading for all mechanical, chemical and industrial engineers working in the field of heat transfer, graduate schools or industry. - Provides an overview of review articles on topics of current interest - Bridges the gap between academic researchers and practitioners in industry - A long-running and prestigious series
