The reader is guided through the various cervical structures in a series of chapters depicting the methods employed by surgeons operating in vivo. The illustrations provide an overview of all surgical anatomy relevant to the treatment of oncologic patients. Compared with the first edition, revisions have been made when appropriate and an important new chapter has been added on microscopic anatomy and laryngeal cancer. This chapter, which will also be of interest to pathologists, documents the microscopic anatomy of the larynx, presents patterns of spread and surgical options, and depicts the major surgical procedures on the larynx with the aid of numerous photographs and line drawings.

The dissection of surgical specimens from the upper aero digestive tract is often difficult due to the anatomically complicated nature of this area. Local environ ment dictates routes of tumour spread and surgical margins at risk and these features differ for various subsites within this part of the body. Moreover, ade quate investigation of surgical specimens of the upper aero digestive tract requires knowledge of the various types of surgical procedures used for differ ent areas and should provide data that enable the surgeon to correlate preoper atively performed diagnostic imaging with the macroscopic findings obtained postoperatively. The aim of this book is to provide guidelines for the anatomical dissection of specimens from oral and sinonasal cavities, pharynx and larynx. This is done by illustrations that combine drawings of tumours at various anatomical subsites, details of the respective surgical procedures, the specimens thus obtained, and the way to dissect these specimens as shown by colour photographs of surgical specimens handled in the way schematically outlined. The book will be of benefit for pathologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ENT surgeons and residents in training for these specialties. v Contents 1 Introduction . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 1 Head and Neck Specimens and Surgical Pathology 3 General Technical Notes 3 Anatomy 2 Oral Cavity . . . . . . 5 Anatomical Subregions 5 5 Lip ....

Ablative tumor surgery of the head and neck region often results in severe cosmetic and functional deformities. In these cases, microvascular free-tissue transfer enables three-dimensional reconstruction of head and neck defects. The selection of adequate donor tissue and a profound knowledge of the human anatomy and the various harvesting techniques are paramount in ensuring successful reconstruction. Reflecting current surgical approaches, this book presents the most frequently used flaps in head and neck surgery, including detailed overviews as well as their respective pearls and pitfalls. Moreover, each section contains a synopsis and pre-operative checklist. The overlay-technique merges high-quality-photographs with drawings and precisely illustrates the step-to-step descriptions of the different flap harvesting techniques, making this manual in pocket size an unique and accessible reference for both doctors in training and specialists in the field of otolaryngology, head and neck, plastic, maxillofacial and skull base surgery.
