The "Implementation of Past NSRP Research through Education and Training" project was proposed in 1994 and funded as a 1995 NSRP project (SP 9-95-2). The concept was to analyze existing NSRP research and determine important areas where education and training could enhance implementation. The initial implementation involved development of two workshops and could be followed by additional educational and training projects contingent upon this project's results and future funding. This final report details the results of the analysis how the workshops were developed and presented and the workshop outcomes. The objectives of this project are as follows: * Identify important areas of existing NSRP research for which education and training can significantly facilitate the implementation of research results in U.S. shipyards. * Develop and present two short courses including related instructional materials at four locations in support of the implementation of two NSRP research areas deemed important but not yet widely and/or successfully implemented at U.S. shipyards. * Lay the foundation for additional courses to be developed and presented in support of NSRP research implementation in other important subject areas.

This document contains course notes of the short course on implementing advanced technology as a part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program. Over the past two decades US. shipbuilders have amassed a great amount of DATA on the Best Shipbuilding Practices throughout the world through direct technology transfer and the sponsorship of the National ShipbuildingResearch Program. Many US. shipbuilders have used this knowledge to improve parts of the overall shipbuilding process. Not withstanding these positive yet intermittent achievements much must still be done to integrate all the knowledge into a superior set ofshipbuilding strategies to move U.S shipbuilders into a truly global shipbuilding competitive position. Developing the strategies is obviously just the beginning. Committing to their implementation is essential for success in the marketplace. The paper stresses the development and implementation of comprehensive strategies for the U.S. shipbuilders by exploring the Global concepts of integrated product development, accuracy control, stable processes, variety reduction, throughput improvement and, to make it all happen, re-engneering.

As a sub-task of the NSRP project, Application of Industrial Engineering Techniques to Reduce Workers Compensation and Environmental Costs (8-96-3), the NASSCO Training Department and Environmental Engineering Department developed an interactive, computer based training (CBT) module. the objective of this sub-task was to provide computer-based training to shipyard personnel on environmental issues that impact the shipyard operation and production. The CBT module that was developed addresses the training requirements for the NASSCO shipyard personnel who are engaged in transfer of oil and bulk quantity hazardous materials over water. The contents of the CBT module are in accordance with the U.S. Coast Guard regulations as specified in 33 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 154 and 156. This report describes the logistic of how the CBT module was developed for the NASSCO shipyard.
